Typical mistakes made by Czech learners of English in word order and tenses

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to find out how much are Czech students of English influenced by their mother tongue, namely in two branches of grammar ? word order and tenses. The thesis is hereby divided into two main parts, where each includes a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part the basic principles of the problem are explained and the comparison between Czech and English principles is made. The practical part deals with particular errors in sentences taken from essays written by grammar school students. Possible causes of these errors are analyzed and the grammatically correct variations are offered. Finally a few exercises focused on elimination of typical errors made by Czech students in word order and tenses are suggested.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit, do jaké míry ovlivňuje české studenty anglického jazyka jejich mateřština, a to konkrétně ve dvou odvětvích gramatiky ? slovosledu a slovesných časech. Práce je dle těchto zkoumaných oblastí rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí, z nichž každá zahrnuje část teoretickou, kde vysvětlím základní principy dané problematiky a poskytnu jejich srovnání v českém a anglickém jazyce, a část praktickou, kde uvedu konkrétní gramaticky nesprávně vytvořené věty získané z esejí studentů gymnázia, následně nastíním jejich možné příčiny a nabídnu jejich gramaticky správné varianty. Nakonec navrhnu několik cvičení, která by mohla pomoci eliminovat nejčastější chyby českých studentů ve slovosledu a v užití slovesných časů.
