I rule, you serve: analysing the titular character of The Great series in the context of the development of heroines in the biopic genre.

Abstract:

Hlavním záběrem bakalářské práce je rozbor prostředků a postupů, jež daly vzniknout inovativnímu vyobrazení Kateřiny Veliké v seriálu Veliká (2020-?). V rámci jeho analýzy se věnuji čtyřem hlavním oblastem, které pojetí hlavní hrdinky kontextualizují a zároveň osvětlují, odkud pramení její značně osobité pojetí: žánrové teorii, konvencím biografických filmů s ženskou protagonistkou, komparaci Veliké s již existujícími díly o Kateřině Veliké a koncepci audiovizuálního autorství.

Abstract:

The main focus of this bachelor thesis is the examination of various means that helped constitute the innovative portrayal of Catherine the Great in the The Great (2020-?) series. To analyze those elements, I explore four main areas that contextualize the heroine’s depiction and also reveal the origins of the distinctive take on her image: genre theory, the conventions of biographical films with a female protagonist, the comparison of The Great with already existing takes on Catherine the Great and the concept of audiovisual authorship.
