The Analysis of Conceptual Metaphor in the Young Adult Magazine Discourse

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá výzkumem konceptuální metafory používané v diskurzu časopisů pro mládež. Analyzovaný korpus, který slouží jako základ korpusem řízeného výzkumu, je sestaven z čtyřiadvaceti článku pocházejících ze dvou magazínů, australského Frankie a amerického Girls‘ Life. Práce je rozdělená do dvou sekcí: teoretické a praktické. Teoretická sekce pojednává o teorii konceptuální metafory, jejím rozšíření a metodách analýzy. Praktická sekce metodicky prezentuje a zkoumá zjištění z analýzy. V diplomové práci je uplatněna metodologie navržená skupinou Pragglejaz (2007), za pomocí které byly v textu analyzovány metaforicky použité výrazy. Na základě jejich významu byly tyto výrazy uspořádaný do tematických skupin, které umožňují systematickou a efektivní analýzu. Závěrečná sekce přináší porovnání frekvence zdrojových a cílových domén identifikovaných v analýze. Tyto informace společně poskytují obsáhlý a detailní obraz metaforického jazyka využívaného v diskurzu časopisů pro mládež.

Abstract:

This thesis details the investigation of the conceptual metaphor utilised in the young adult magazine discourse. A compiled corpus comprising twenty-four articles from two distinct magazines, Australian Frankie and American Girls’ Life, serves as the basis for the corpus-driven analysis. The thesis is divided into two sections: theoretical and practical. In the theoretical section, the Conceptual Metaphor Theory, its extensions, and methods of analysis are discussed. In the practical section, the findings of the analysis are methodically presented and examined. Following the methodology proposed by the Pragglejaz Group (2007), the magazines’ articles were closely inspected for any metaphorically used expressions. Based on their meanings, the expressions were then organised into thematic groups which allow for a systematic and efficient examination. In the concluding section, the frequency of the identified source and target domains are compared, presenting a comprehensive image of the metaphorical language usage in the young adult magazine discourse.
