Analysis of power rivalry between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America in Asia-Pacific region

Abstract:

Ve své práci se zabývám postavením Číny vůči Spojeným státům americkým v asijsko-pacifickém regionu. Zkoumám, zda je Čína revizionistická mocnost a usiluje o změnu regionálního řádu, který udržují Spojené státy americké, a nebo spolu s nimi udržuje status-quo. Při zkoumání využívám kritéria pro spokojenost/nespokojenost se statusem-quo dle teorie přesunu moci. Konkrétně kritérium vojenské výdaje a kritérium zapojení do regionálních institucí. Ty dále rozšiřuji o čínskou vojenskou strategii, vojenské vztahy Číny a USA a čínskou námořní expanzi. Zapojení do regionálních institucí zkoumám v rámci ekonomického sektoru a zapojení Číny do Sdružení národů jihovýchodní Asie (ASEAN), Asijsko-pacifického hospodářského společenství (APEC), Asijské banky pro investice do infrastruktury a jejímu postoji k Regionálnímu obsáhlému ekonomickému partnerství (RCEP) a Trans-pacifickému partnerství (TPP), které dále rozšiřuji o kritéria Alastaira Ian Johnstona. Těmi jsou respektování hodnot organizace a podílení se na jejím chodu a nepodkopávání původních hodnot organizace. To sleduji v období od konce studené války.

Abstract:

In this work I examine the role of the People's Republic of China in the Asia-Pacific region with regards to the USA. The main question is: Is China a status-quo power or a revisionist power? My research is based on criterions for satisfaction/dissatisfaction with status-quo from the power transition theory. I have focused on military expenditure and membership in regional economic organizations.Further I have expanded the military expenditure with the chinese military strategy, military relations and chinese naval expansion. The second criterion is expanded with Alastair Ian Johnstone criterions for respecting rules and norms of economic organizations and participation on the decision-making process. Economic organizations examined are Association of South East Asian Nations - ASEAN, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation - APEC and regional trade agreements such as Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership - RCEP, Trans-Pacific Partnership - TPP and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank - AIIB. Chinese role in the regional order is viewed as inferior to the USA which are on the top of the hierarchical order globaly and regionally. The period examined is since the end of the cold war.
