On Cognitive Synonymy: A Case Study (Adverbs of Frequency)

Abstract:

The thesis deals with semantical analysis of three adverbs of frequency that mean "not often": rarely, seldom and infrequently. I have worked with internet corpuses such as the British National Corpus and the VIEW. I have examined the occurrence of individual adverbs and provided statistical data of the most frequent collocations. I have also provided a list of expressions that are used in spoken language: once in a while, once in a blue moon, once in a lifetime, hardly ever and scarcely ever.
