Modal verbs “should” and “ought to” – a description of their usage and functions in contemporary British and American English based on corpus analysis

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá modálními slovesy „should” a „ought to” a základními významy, v nichž se tato způsobová slovesa v angličtině vyskytují. Teoretická část je stručným úvodem do problematiky modálních sloves a modality obecně a zabývá se rovněž jednotlivými typy modality a popisem jejich významů. Praktická část je zaměřena na korpusovou analýzu, přičemž srovnává data získaná v korpusech British National Corpus (BNC) a Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Hlavním cílem této práce je zjistit četnost jednotlivých významů modálních sloves „should” a „ought to” v analyzovaných vzorcích a porovnat rozdílnosti v americké a britské angličtině.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the modal verbs “should” and “ought to,” and defines the basic meanings of these modal verbs in English. The theoretical part is a brief introduction to the issue of modal verbs and modality, discussing different types of modality and its meaning. The practical part consists of an analysis of the corpora, while comparing data in the corpora British National Corpus (BNC) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The main aim of this study is to show the frequency of individual meanings of modal verbs “should” and “ought to” in the analysed samples and to compare the differences in American and British English.
