The Influence of Fandom Culture On Individual Learning and Acquiring the English Language in Relation to Krashen's Hypotheses

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o internetových fanouškovských komunitách neboli fandomech a jejich potenciálnímu vlivu na jednotlivé fanoušky z hlediska osvojování anglického jazyka a zlepšování anglických dovedností. K výsledkům se dostává s pomocí studie stylů učení Neomilleniálů coby jejich obecných preferencí v oblasti vzdělávání, a analýzy konceptu a funkce fandomů společně s jednotlivými fanouškovskými aktivitami v zájmu ukázky jejich potenciálu. Praktická část zahrnuje výzkum ve formě elektronicky rozeslaného anonymního dotazníku, který reprezentuje zkušenosti a názory 106 nerodilých mluvčích angličtiny, kteří se aktivně zapojují do fandomů. Výsledky této práce ukazují, že fandomy opravdu vykazují potenciál pro přejímání angličtiny, ale vzhledem k neprofesionálnosti fanouškovských komunit také vykazují určité nejistoty a nástrahy, kterým je třeba se vyvarovat.

Abstract:

This thesis is about internet fan communities and their potential influence on individual fans in terms of naturally acquiring English language and improving English skills. This is accomplished by a short study of Neomillennials’ learning styles as their overall learning preferences, and the analysis of concept and function of fandoms and their fannish activities. This is followed by the application of Second Language Acquisition hypotheses by Stephen Krashen on relevant language-related fandom activities in order to demonstrate their potential. Empirical research is executed via an electronically distributed anonymous survey that represents opinions and experience of 106 non-native English speakers actively engaged in fandoms. According to results, fandoms indeed feature a significant language acquisition potential, but due to the unprofessional nature of fannish communities, there are also significant uncertainties and pitfalls to look out for.
