The Role of Technology, Food, and Pharmaceutical Companies in the Use of Prison Labor in the USA

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the way prison labor together with mass incarceration in the USA is used by the private sector, specifically by technology, food, and pharmaceutical companies. This issue is allowed by the loophole in the 13th amendment of the United States Constitution, which abolishes slavery but does not apply to people convicted of a crime. The thesis outlines the history of mass incarceration and prison labor and tracks specific companies from the mentioned industries which use and potentially exploit prison labor. Furthermore, it specifies the conditions that prisons and the companies create for the prisoners and compares the industries' approach. The thesis makes use of reports and articles about, as well as investigations into, the respective companies and the industries in general, as well as the prison policies as such.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na způsob, jakým je práce vězňů spolu s masovým uvězňováním v USA využívána soukromým sektorem, konkrétně technologickými, potravinářskými a farmaceutickými společnostmi. Tuto problematiku umožňuje mezera ve 13. dodatku Ústavy Spojených států amerických, který ruší otroctví, ale nevztahuje se na osoby odsouzené za trestný čin. Práce nastiňuje historii masového věznění a vězeňské práce a sleduje konkrétní společnosti z uvedených odvětví, které využívají a potenciálně zneužívají práci vězňů. Dále specifikuje podmínky, které věznice a společnosti pro vězně vytvářejí, a porovnává přístup těchto odvětví. Práce pracuje se zprávami, články a šetřeními, které byly provedeny směrem k jednotlivým společnostem a průmyslovým odvětvím obecně, stejně jako směrem k vězeňské politice jako takové.
