Managers of Human Hopes: An Ethnography of Social Marginalization

Abstract:

Práce etnografickou metodou popisuje vztahy mezi rozvojovými projekty, antropologickým věděním a humanitarismem v podobě tzv. humanitárního diskursu. Shrnuje výsledky výzkumu, který probíhal od jara 2015 do února 2017. Autor se zaměřuje na velký rozvojový projekt v romských osadách na východním Slovensku. Teoretizuje oficiální cíle projektu prostřednictvím antropologie humanitarismu a sleduje dopady v konkrétních romských osadách.

Abstract:

This thesis, written with the use of an ethnographic method, describes the relationships between development projects, anthropological knowledge and humanitarianism in the form of humanitarian discourse. It summarizes the results of the research, which lasted from the spring 2015 until February 2017. The author focuses on one big development project, which was held in the roma settlements in the east region of Slovakia. He theorizes the official goals of the project from the point of view of humanitarian anthropology and observes its impacts in specific Roma settlements.
