From Customer to Friend. Membership programs of selected galleries in the Czech Republic and their members’ motivation.

Abstract:

Proponovaná diplomová práce je zaměřena na sdružení přátel výtvarného umění zakládaná při českých galeriích od druhé poloviny 20. století až po současnost, s důrazem na jejich proměnu po roce 1989. Teoretický úvod tematizuje roli přátel, dobrovolníků a donátorů v galerijním provozu. Těžiště práce tvoří případové studie členských programů vybraných galerií v České republice, založené na osobních rozhovorech, s cílem poznat odlišné fungování těchto uskupení i jejich vliv na umělecké instituce z pohledu managementu. Praktickou část naplňuje průzkum motivace členů k setrvání v členských programech, které proběhlo formou dotazníkového šetření. Cílem práce je zasazení výsledků kvantitativního i kvalitativního výzkumu do historického a mezinárodního kontextu s návrhem změn, potenciálně vedoucích k budování komunity galerií. Práce přináší nové poznání této problematiky a zároveň nastiňuje potřebu budoucího výzkumu v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The proposed diploma thesis is focused on the association of “friends” of fine arts founded at Czech galleries from the second half of the 20th century to the present, with an emphasis on their transformation after 1989. The theoretical introduction thematizes the role of friends, volunteers, and donors in the galleries. The focus of the thesis consists of case studies of membership programs of selected galleries in the Czech Republic, based on personal interviews, with the aim of learning about the different functioning of these groups and their influence on art institutions from the management point of view. The practical part contains a survey of the members’ motivation to stay in membership programs, which took place in the form of a questionnaire. The aim of the thesis is to place the results of quantitative and qualitative research in a historical and international context with the proposal of changes potentially leading to the building of a community of galleries. The thesis brings new knowledge of this issue and at the same time outlines the need for future research in this area.
