Religiosity in Urkesh: The Segment of an Early Religion of the Hurrians

Abstract:

Urkesh was situated in the territory of today’s Habur region in the north-eastern Syria, and it belonged to the significant urban centres in this area. It is evidenced in the sources mainly from the last quarter of the third millennium BC. Several findings show that the city was by Hurrian’s character and this linguistic-ethnic element played a very important role there. Furthermore, significant Akkadian impacts are evidenced. The aim of the work is to highlight the specific features in the material culture, through which is possible to identify a religiosity and also on the basis of the written sources determine Hurrian’s elements of this religiosity. Buildings, such as a palace, underground structure, platform and a temple are studied in details and ideologically linked too. In this case is possible to speak about so called chthonic sacral complex maintained by the ruling dynasty. The attention is also given to the analysis of the glyptic and its various motifs with the theme of religious-mythological and political-ideological nature which results in the several conclusions. To explain the establishment and a spread of Hurrian’s cultural elements in the city, and it seems that even further beyond its borders, is the task of the hypothesis that is based on the Hurrianization of Urkesh, which could also be supported by the local dynasty.

Abstract:

Urkeš, ktorý bol situovaný na území cháburského regiónu v dnešnej severovýchodnej Sýrii, patril v tejto oblasti medzi významné mestské centrá, o čom sú doklady najmä z poslednej štvrtiny 3. tisícročia pred n. l. Viaceré nálezy dokazujú, že mesto bolo churritského rázu a že tento jazykovo-etnický prvok tu zohrával veľmi významnú úlohu. Okrem toho sú doložené aj značné akkadské vplyvy. Cieľom práce je poukázať na konkrétne znaky v materiálnej kultúre, prostredníctvom ktorých je možné identifikovať religiozitu a aj na základe písomných prameňov určiť churritské prvky tejto religiozity. Podrobne sú preberané stavby, ako palác, podzemná štruktúra, platforma a chrám, ktoré boli ideologicky prepojené. V tomto prípade je možné hovoriť o tzv. chtonickom sakrálnom komplexe udržiavanom panovníckou dynastiou. Pozornosť je tiež upriamená na analýzu glyptiky a jej rôznorodé motívy s tematikou nábožensko-mytologického a politicko-ideologického charakteru, z čoho plynú viaceré závery. Vysvetliť etablovanie a šírenie churritských kultúrnych prvkov v meste, a zdá sa, že aj ďalej za jeho hranice, má za úlohu hypotéza založená na churritizácii Urkeša, ktorá mohla byť taktiež podporovaná miestnou dynastiou.
