The Ethnography of Taijiquan Practice: The search for slow time by modulating the senses

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá dlouhodobou etnografii bojového umění klubu Chen Taijiquan. Hlavním cílem práce je rozvinout pochopení samotných praktik Taijiquan skrze debatu o proměnách smyslových modalit, ke kterým při praktikování u jejich cvičenců a cvičenek dochází, a zodpovědět na otázky, jakým způsobem k těmto proměnám (a potenciálům k proměnám) smyslů dochází skrze specifické smyslové pedagogiky. S využitím teoretického rámce antropologie smyslů a metodologie inspirované rytmusanalýzou Henriho Lefebvra a modální antropologií Francoise Laplantina přináší práce mimo jiné nový pohled na vztah mezi různými uspořádáními smyslových modalit na vnímání času. Práce přispívá k mezioborovým smyslovým studiím a rozšiřuje porozumění vztahu mezi tělesnými praktikami, smysly a vnímáním času.

Abstract:

The dissertation examines the long-term ethnography of the martial arts club Chen Taijiquan. The thesis aims to develop an understanding of Taijiquan practices through a discussion of the transformations of sensory modalities that occur in their practitioners and to answer questions about how these transformations (and potential for transformations) of the senses occur through specific sensory pedagogies. Drawing on the theoretical framework of the Anthropology of the Senses and a methodology inspired by Henri Lefebvre's Rhythmanalysis and Francois Laplantin's Modal Anthropology, among others, the paper provides a new perspective on the relationship between different arrangements of sensory modalities on the perception of time. The work contributes to interdisciplinary sensory studies and extends the understanding of the relationship between bodily practices, the senses and the perception of time.
