Various Accounts of the Life of Ulrike von Levetzow and genre analysis of the selected works

Abstract:

This Master´s thesis focuses on three novels and one short novel written by three different authors. These works reflect the relationship between the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and young Ulrike von Levetzow during the years 1821 – 1823 in Mariánské lázně. The first part presents the plots of the above-mentioned works. The work also points out the presence of characters from other Goethe’s works - Faust and The Sorrows of Young Werther. The authors focused also on Ulrika’s influence on Goethe’s works, which is outlined in this part as well. It also mentions other authors who were inspired by the story. Last but not least, the work deals with determining the genres of novel and short novel. From this point of view, the last chapter is about the target readers of this type of literature and the authors’ motives that led them to writing these works.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o třech románech a jedné novele od tří různých autorů. Tyto díla reflektují vztah německého básníka Goetha k mladé Ulrike von Levetzow v letech 1821 – 1823 v Mariánských lázních. První část se zaměřuje na všechny děje románů a novely vybraných autorů. V daných románech práce rovněž poukazuje na přítomnost postav z Goethových děl - Faust a Utrpení mladého Werthera. Tato část také nastiňuje vliv Ulriky na Goethovu tvorbu, kterou se zabývají samotní autoři. Dále jsou zde zmíněny ostatní spisovatelé, kteří se také nechali inspirovat tímto příběhem. V neposlední řadě se práce zabývá určením žánrů románů a jedné novely. Z tohoto pohledu se pak poslední kapitola věnuje cílové skupině čtenářů tohoto typu literatury a motivům autorů, které vedly k tvorbě těchto děl.
