Khedives of Egypt

Abstract:

Diplomová práce podává ucelený pohled na období vlády chedívů v Egyptě. Tato éra egyptských dějin je zpracována komplexně tak, aby doplnila a rozšířila dostupné informace o epoše chedívátu v českém prostředí. K tomuto účelu bylo využito zejména publikací současníků doby. Každému z chedívů je věnována jedna kapitola, další dvě části diplomové práce se věnují běžnému životu v této době a rovněž provincii Súdánu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the Egyptian historical era of the khedives, descendants of the famous leader of Egypt - Muhammad Ali, who ruled Egypt during the years 1863-1914. This period was an abbortive attempt to pick up the glory of the days of Muhammad Ali again, khedives carried Egypt into a tight British grasp. First part of the diploma thesis pursues the reign epoch of the first and the most renowned of the khedives - khedive Ismail. Next part of the thesis examines the rule of Ismail´s son and successor, khedive Tawfiq. It proceeds with the description of the invasion of Great Britain into Egypt, after that the thesis traces ruling days of the last khedive Abbas Hilmi II., who tried to oppose the British power in Egypt, but in vain. Next the diploma thesis deals with the changes of living conditions in Egypt and also with the Egyptian and British-Egyptian policy in Sudan.
