Morality and Religious Elements in the Novels of William Golding

Abstract:

The thesis analyses three novels of William Golding--Lord of the Flies, The Spire, and The Inheritors--that debate, primarily, the evil nature in human beings. It explores what Golding's novels communicate to the reader about moral principals that serve as the basis of a working society, and about religion. Furthermore, it focuses on the conflicts between good and evil, and it attempts to describe the savage behaviour leading to inhumanity and cruel murders. The thesis is also concerned with the use of various symbols and contradictory elements, and it pays particular attention to the original sin and the fall of man.
