Existential novel rediscovered: how to read Jean-Paul Sartre's existential novel?

Abstract:

In our study of Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist novel, we focus our research on the comprehension and appropriate lecture of the philosophical prose of the author, a so-called phenomenon of a “total intellectual”. Therefore, we are going to deepen and precise de definition of Sartre’s existentialist novel as a wider phenomenon linked to some essential theoretical – primary sources from his specialized literature (e.g. essays on literature) as well as by the means of the very textual analysis that the second part of this works deal with. The main hypothesis is the inevitability of apriori knowledge of Sartre’s philosophy of existence in order to understand the deeper level of the novel, given the fact that only intentionality that we discover in his works are the arguments that any genre is to express how the world function. Literature is inherently "engaged". Sartre aims to express his vision and feelings about the world in a consistent manner also in the form of novel in order to justify his own being, with no predominant goals of popularizing his philosophy. What also underlines this thesis is not only the analysis of the chosen novel, but also the fact that the last volume was not completed as not only the philosopher’s individual worldview has shifted at the time to more socially oriented thinking, but also, according to his world that he could not have written what he had not gone through. The knowledge of the existentialist concepts is inevitable to essentially understand Sartre’s message as it clearly is part of his paradigm, personality and sensibility.

Abstract:

Prezentovaná práca sa zameriava na správne porozumenie a čítanie románovej epiky filozofa Jean-Paul Sartra. Prostredníctvom tohto ústredného motívu práce definujeme teoretické a autobiografické zdroje ako aj samotnej praktickej analýzy vybraného literárneho textu (Cesty Slobody: Vek rozumu) z prvého obdobia Sartrovej tvorby ďalej upresňujeme obsah a prehlbujeme charakter Sartrovho existencialistického románu. Vychádzame z predpokladu, že nejde o bežný román zostavený tak aby vyhovoval jeho filozofickým tézam a tak jednoduchou cestou spopularizoval existencializmus ako filozofiu. Naopak, tak ako Sartre nemá radosť z médiami vygenerovanej slávy a nepresného výkladu jeho filozofie, tak veľmi, ako sa zdá mal potrebu konzistentne vyjadriť svoj svetonázor formou románu, ktorý by tak aj v jeho očiach dal jeho existencii zmysel. O tom, že ide skutočne o konzistentný pohľad autora na svet, svedčí aj nedokončenie románového cyklu, jednak zmenami ktoré sa udiali v samotnom autorovi a jednak tým, že to čo chcel malo byť pôvodne vyjadrené v poslednom dieli v živote neprežil. Čo je teda pre Sartra krásna literatúra, ako k nej pristupovať a v akých úrovniach ju čítať? Znalosť jeho filozofie existencie sa v tomto smere prekážala ako esenciálna – niečo ako výkladový slovník pre pochopenie odkazu Jean-Paul Sartra.
