Comparative Analysis of Socio-Economic Impacts of the 2008 Financial Crisis on the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta Regions in Vietnam

Abstract:

This study examines the socio-economic impacts of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on Vietnam, focusing on the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta regions. Using a quantitative approach and secondary data sources, the research explores the crisis’s effects on GDP growth, employment, foreign direct investment (FDI), and social welfare. The findings reveal that while both regions experienced economic slowdowns, their recovery trajectories differed due to variations in industrialization and economic structures. The Red River Delta, with a more diversified economy, showed a quicker rebound, whereas the Mekong Delta, heavily reliant on agriculture, faced prolonged challenges. The crisis also exacerbated income inequality, poverty, and migration trends, straining urban infrastructure. The study highlights Vietnam’s economic vulnerabilities and the importance of policy measures aimed at strengthening financial resilience, diversifying economic sectors, and improving social safety nets to mitigate the effects of future global economic disruptions.
