Abstract:

Práce se zabývá různými druhy prolínání zájmů ochrany přírody a udržitelného zemědělství. Analyzuje dva konkrétní pokusy o environmentálně i sociálně ohleduplné pěstování, Crabtree Farms v Chattanooze, Tennessee, a zahrady Botanicus v Ostré, nedaleko Lysé nad Labem. Po teoretické stránce je práce založena na bioregionalistických přístupech a nahlíží na Crabtree a Botanicus jako na dvě různé, ale propojené formy reinhabitace. Po metodologické stránce se práce opírá o mou zkušenost brigádnice na obou farmách, o neformální rozhovory s mými tamními vedoucími a o primární i sekundární internetové zdroje. Práce je strukturována podle vybraných foodshedových principů (blízkost, lokálnost, regionalita; příroda jako měřítko; komensální či spolustolovnická komunita; sebeobrana, secese, následnost) a naznačuje, že tyto principy mohou být nápomocny při zkoumání jednotlivých zemědělských iniciativ a při idenfikaci jejich silných stránek i oblastí, které je potřeba zlepšit.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the ground where nature conservation and sustainable farming may meet. It does so by analyzing two concrete attempts to work the land in environmentally as well as socially respectful ways, namely Crabtree Farms in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the Botanicus gardens in Ostra, the Czech Republic. Theoretically, the analysis draws on bioregional approaches, considering Crabtree and Botanicus as two distinct yet connected forms of reinhabitation. As for the method used, it combines my field work experience and informal interviews with my supervisors on each farm with the primary and secondary sources available online. The thesis is structured according to some of the main foodshed principles (proximity, locality, regionality; nature as measure; commensal community; self-protection, secession, succession), and it shows that these principles offer a helpful tool to identify both the strengths and the areas in need of further improvement in particular farming ventures.
