Combusiton Analysis of Spark Ignition Engine Operating on Various Fuel Blends

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřena do oblasti výzkumu pístových spalovacích motorů metodou měření tlaku ve válci v závislosti na stupni natočení klikové hřídele motoru. Popisuje problematiku spalování připravené homogenní směsi v zážehových motorech a změny, které nastávají při provozu motoru na vysokoprocentní palivové směsi etanolu s benzínem. Experimentální část se zabývá analýzou spalovacího procesu zážehového motoru provozovaného na benzín a na jeho palivové směsi s etanolem a dále na vysokoprocentní směsi etanolu a benzínu s různou koncentrací vody. Hodnocení je provedeno dle produkce výfukových emisí, významných parametrů spalovacího procesu a výstupních parametrů motoru. Cílem je tedy porovnat vliv spalování různých směsí paliv na výše uvedené parametry a nutné změny, které musí nastat v nastavení řízení motoru při provozu na testovaná paliva. Dílčím cílem je také ověřit, zdali koncentrace vody v palivové směsi etanol-benzín je nežádoucí příměs nebo naopak záměrně vytvořené emulzní palivo. Výsledky experimentálního měření ukázaly, že spalování palivových směsí etanol-benzín má příznivé účinky na výstupní parametry motoru, produkci emisí a na hodnocené parametry spalovacího procesu. Spalování hydratovaných palivových směsí etanolu s benzínem se pozitivně projevilo při koncentraci vody 5 – 10 % obj. ve vzorku. Zápornou stránkou všech palivových směsí etanolu s benzínem je nutnost navýšení dávky paliva, což se negativně projeví na spotřebě paliva a produkci CO2 ve srovnání s benzínem.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis presents the results of research into the topic of internal combustion engines based on the method of measurement of cylinder pressure due to the crank angle. It describes the combustion of premixed homogenous air-fuel mixture in spark ignited engines and the changes that occur when the engine is running on fuel mixtures with high ethanol to gasoline ratios. The experimental part concentrates on the combustion analysis of spark ignition engine fueled by gasoline and its fuel mixtures with ethanol. It also deals with mixtures containing high percentage of ethanol, low percentage of gasoline and variable water content. The evaluation is based on the production of exhaust gases pollutants, important parameters of combustion process and output engine parameters. The aim of the research is to compare the impacts of the combustion of various fuel mixtures on the above mentioned parameters and the necessary changes which have to be set up in the engine electronic control unit. Another aim is to determine if the concentration of water in ethanol-gasoline mixture is undesirable, or if it is to be regarded as an intentionally created emulsion fuel. The measurement results indicate that the combustion of ethanol-gasoline mixtures has positive impact on the output engine parameters, emission production and on the evaluated parameters of the combustion process. The experiments showed that fueling the engine with hydrated ethanol–gasoline fuel blends containing 5 – 10 % of water positively influenced the combustion parameters. The disadvantage of all ethanol-gasoline fuel mixtures is the necessity to increase fuel dosage, which has a negative impact on fuel consumption and CO2 production in comparison with gasoline.
