Koller's Collection of Antiquities at the Turn of the Early Modern and Modern Age

Abstract:

Magisterská práce je pokračováním bakalářské práce, která se zabývala osobou sběratele, shromážděním jeho sbírky a následným rozpadem, zde je prostor věnován samotnému obsahu této kolekce. Jednotlivé kapitoly se nejprve zaměřují na konkrétní sbírkové soubory (vázy, mramory, bronzy, egyptské starožitnosti a zbylé okrajové soubory), následuje příslušná problematika nebo fenomén, aby čtenář nakonec získal povědomí nejen o obsahu sbírky, ale taky o jeho širším významu v kontextu doby vzniku. Klíčovým pramenem pro kompletaci sbírky je inventář Kollerovy sbírky, zachycující poměrnou část jeho kolekce. Celá práce vrcholí interpretací sbírky a jejího celkového významu s ohledem na dobu, ve které vznikala. Jakým způsobem se v ní odráží společensko-historický obrat od raného novověku k moderní době, jak se Kollerovy osvícenské záměry a charakter jeho sbírky shodují s vytvářením nové společnosti a její identity skrze umělecké sbírky.

Abstract:

This master thesis is a natural continuation of the bachelor thesis focused on the person of the collector, creation of collections and their subsequent decomposition. This work is mainly dedicated to the content of the colection itself. Individual chapters are focused on various parts of the collection (vases, marbles, bronzes, egyptian antiquities and further collateral themes) followed by explanation of matters and phenomena to not only let the readers of the thesis know the basic characteristics of the collection but also its significance in wider context. The key source for the completation of the decomposed collection is Koller´s inventory covering most of the collection's content. The whole thesis concludes by interpretation of the collection and its meaning in context of the period. Facing the fact of the social-historical reversal from the modern history to the new age, Koller´s enlightenment interests and the character of his colletion correspond with creating a new society and its identity through the art collections.
