Activity of Lesser horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus hipposideros at a hibernaculum

Abstract:

Výzkum vrápence malého (Rhinolophus hipposideros) probíhal na lokalitě štola Sintrová. Byl zaměřen na vyhodnocení relativní aktivity a relativní letové aktivity uvnitř i vně zimoviště. Během zimního období 2008/2009 proběhlo celkem 18 pozorovacích nocí. Pozorování se skládalo z celonočního monitoringu pomocí automatické audio a video detekce. Délka noci byla vymezena západem a východem slunce. Zdrojem hodnocení relativní aktivity byly videonahrávky pořízené z bezprostřední blízkosti zimující kolonie R. hipposideros. Hodnocení relativní letové aktivity probíhalo na základě nahrávek echolokačních hlasů pořízených automatickou detekcí ultrazvuku a také na základě videozáznamů. Videozáznamy byly pořizovány vždy uvnitř zimoviště. Bat-detektor s audiorekorderem byl umístěn vždy ve vchodu štoly a snímal tak aktivitu vně zimoviště. Byly sledovány environmentální (externí a interní teplota, úhrn srážek) a časové faktory (část noci, sezóna) ovlivňující relativní aktivitu v průběhu zimování. Každá noc byla rozdělena na desetiny a aktivita byla hodnocena v příslušných dekádách. Období zimního spánku bylo rozděleno na 4 etapy a byly sledovány sezónní změny, které aktivitu na zimovišti provázejí. Relativní aktivita byla vyjádřena počtem minut se záznamem jedince R. hipposideros vztaženým na jednu hodinu nahrávání (min+/hod). Nejvyšší aktivita byla zaznamenána během podzimních a jarních přeletů, kdy docházelo k obsazování, resp. opouštění zimoviště. Během hibernace byla relativní aktivita minimální, ne však nulová. Ve většině případů byla zaznamenána nejvyšší aktivita v druhé dekádě noci, a to v rozmezí 126 až 190 min po západu slunce. Aktivita pozitivně korelovala s teplotou uvnitř zimoviště. Ta byla závislá na externí teplotě. Video i audio záznamy potvrdily, že jedinci R. hipposideros jsou aktivní během celého období zimního spánku, a to i během hluboké hibernace.

Abstract:

The research on the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) was conducted in the area of the Sintrova mine. The goal of this research was to assess the relative bat activity and its relative flight activity inside and outside the hibernaculum. A total of 18 night observations were made during the winter season in 2008/2009. The observations consisted of the overnight monitoring with the use of an automatic audio and video detection equipment. The length of a night was defined by the sunset and sunrise. The video recordings, obtained from the wintering R. hipposideros colony’s immediate natural surroundings, constituted the source of the relative bat activity analysis. The relative flight activity analysis was based on the video recordings as well as on the echolocation sound recordings acquired by an automatic ultrasonic detection system. The video recordings always were made inside the hibernaculum. The bat detector together with an audio recorder always were located in the entrance to the adit and scanned the activity inside the hibernaculum. There were observed the environmental (the external and internal temperatures, the total of precipitation amounts) and time factors (the night stage, the season), which influence the bat activity during winter. Each night was divided into tenths, and the activity was assessed within individual decade. The hibernation period was divided into 4 stages, and the season changes, which accompany the activity on the hibernaculum, were observed. The relative bat activity was expressed by an amount of minutes with the record of the R. hipposideros in relation to one hour of a recording (min+/hour). The highest activity was recorded during the autumn and spring flights, when the hibernaculum was either settled or abandoned. The relative bat activity was very low during the hibernation period, but actually, it has never reached zero. The highest activity, in most cases, was recorded in the second decade of a night. This was in between the 126th and 190th minute after the sunset. The activity positively correlated with the temperature inside the hibernaculum. It was dependent on the external temperature. The video and audio recordings confirmed that the R. hipposideros are active during the whole period of hibernation, even if they are in a deep hibernation.
