Presentation of gender roles in live-action and animated version of Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast and their comparison (discourse analysis)

Anotace:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na mediální reprezentaci genderových rolí v animované a filmové verzi Krásky a zvířete od Walta Disneyho. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak se zobrazují hlavní postavy vybraných pohádek v rámci svého genderu a sociálního kontextu, a poznatky porovnat. Teoretická část práce se zabývá sociální a mediální konstrukci reality, teorií socializace, genderem a genderovými rolemi i jejich stereotypizací. Práce se také zaměřuje na společností Walt Disney a její kritiku. Výzkum je prováděn metodou diskurzivní analýzy podle Jamese Paula Geeho, která nám na základě chování, vzhledu a verbální i neverbální komunikace hlavních postav umožnila odhalit, že genderové role ve vzorcích produkovaných médii jsou ovlivněné společenským kontextem a tudíž se v časem mění.

Abstract:

The bachelor´s thesis is focused on media representation of gender roles in animated and film version of Walt Disney´s Beauty and the Beast. Aim of this work is to detect how the main characters in the chosen tales are represented within their gender and social context, and to compare the findings. The theoretical part of the thesis is concerned with social and media construction of reality, the theory of socialization, with gender and gender roles and their stereotypization. The work is also focused on Walt Disney Company and its criticism. The research is performed through method of discourse analysis according to James Paul Gee, which enabled us to discover that through behaviour, appearance and verbal and nonverbal communication of the main characters, the samples produced by media are affected by social context and therefore they vary in time.
