Visions of the End: Eco-Apocalypse in Twenty-First Century America

Abstract:

With an eye to the visibly growing predilection for imagining humanity under siege in a rather disquietingly vulnerable state since Hiroshima's trauma up until the contemporary times, the present doctoral dissertation explores the representation of (eco-)apocalypse in twenty-first-century American literature. Ecological thinking, whether fictional or factual, seems to have been closely linked to the narratives of the future with an underlying Cassandran foreboding spirit. This dissertation analyzes the selected texts through an ecological lens that takes fear and ecophobia as its central thematic concerns with connection to the perception of (eco-)apocalypse. Respectively pre-apocalyptic, apocalyptic, and post-apocalyptic, the selected works are Tom Perrotta's The Leftovers (2011), Nathaniel Rich's Odds Against Tomorrow (2013), and Cormac McCarthy's The Road (2006). The Leftovers demonstrate how fanatical religious beliefs, begotten of fearful times of chaos and uncertainty, can negatively impact people's environmental attitudes feeding into their ecophobic tendencies. Odds Against Tomorrow questions the merit of the over-zealous embrace of the (eco-)catastrophic end-of-times prophecies. Preoccupation with these nighmarish prophecies paradoxically seems to be counterproductive to environmentalism by trapping people in a web of fear-induced paralysis, desensitizing them through repetitive exposure, and leaving them vulnerable towards opportunistic maneuverings. The ecophobically bankrupt natural environment of The Road plays nicely into humanity's fear of an ecological apocalypse; however, the novel preponderantly seems to be preoccupied with the human, good and bad, taking the insolvent earth almost as a donnée.

S ohledem na viditelně rostoucí zálibu v představování lidstva v obležení a ve znepokojivě zranitelném stavu od hirošimského traumatu až po současnost se tato disertační práce zabývá reprezentací (eko-)apokalypsy v americké literatuře jednadvacátého století. Je zjevné, že ekologické myšlení, ať už fiktivní, nebo faktické, bylo úzce spjato s vyprávěním o budoucnosti v základním kassandrovském duchu předtuchy. Tato disertační práce analyzuje vybrané texty ekokritickou optikou, která pojímá strach a ekofobii jako ústřední tematické problémy s vazbou na vnímání (eko-)apokalypsy. Pro analýzu byly vybrány tři romány, které zastupují různé žánry, jmenovitě před-apokalyptický, apokalyptický a post-apokalyptický. Jde o následující díla: The Leftovers (2011) Toma Perrotty, Odds Against Tomorrow (2013) Nathaniela Riche a The Road (2006) Cormaca McCarthyho. Kniha The Leftovers ukazuje, jak fanatická náboženská víra, zrozená v děsivých dobách chaosu a nejistoty, může negativně ovlivnit environmentální postoje lidí a podpořit jejich ekofobní tendence. Odds Against Tomorrow zpochybňuje opodstatněnost příliš horlivého přijímání (eko-)katastrofických proroctví o konci světa. Zaujetí těmito děsivými proroctvími se paradoxně zdá být pro environmentalismus kontraproduktivní, protože způsobuje lidem paralýzu, vyvolanou strachem, znecitlivuje je opakovanou expozicí a činí je zranitelnými vůči oportunistickým manévrům. Ekofobně degradované přírodní prostředí románu The Road umocňuje strach lidstva z ekologické apokalypsy; román se však převážně zabývá člověkem, dobrým i špatným, a nefunkční Zemi bere téměř jako danou.
