Monitoring of urban light pollution

Abstract:

Ve vybraných obcích Jihomoravského kraje byl sledován vývoj intenzity světelného znečištění pomocí metod DPZ. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jaké jsou možnosti sledování tohoto jevu. Výzkum probíhal na starších snímcích ze satelitů DMSP (1992–2013) a novějších snímcích ze satelitu Suomi NPP (2014–2021). Vývoj světelného znečištění byl sledován prostřednictvím průměrných hodnot záření kolmo nad zastavěnou částí vybraných obcí a také kolmo nad jejich katastrálním územím, sekundárně pak byla využita metoda prahování a metoda sledování poměrů záření nad obytnou a neobytnou zástavbou. Vzhledem k rozdílnému radiometrickému i prostorovému rozlišení snímků byla každá ze sekundárních metod použita pouze na snímky z jedné družice. Během sledovaných období míra světelného znečištění značně kolísala, z dlouhodobého hlediska ale až na výjimečné případy postupně narůstala. Pro sledování světelného znečištění na úrovni celých měst a městských částí jsou současně dostupná data dostačující. Jako vhodnější data byla shledána ty, ze satelitu Suomi NPP, jejichž předností je v porovnání s daty ze satelitů DMSP především lepší radiometrické a prostorové rozlišení. K identifikaci konkrétních zdrojů záření by byla potřeba data s podrobnějším rozlišením, ty se sice dají získat leteckým nebo bezpilotním snímkováním, tyto metody jsou ale z ekonomického hlediska nákladné, a tudíž pro pravidelné užití nevhodné.

Abstract:

In selected municipalities of the South Moravian Region, the development of the intensity of light pollution was monitored using remote sensing methods. The aim of the thesis was to find out what are the possibilities of monitoring this phenomenon. The research was conducted on older images from the DMSP satellites (1992–2013) and newer images from the Suomi NPP satellite (2014–2021). The development of light pollution was monitored through average radiation values perpendicularly above the built-up part of selected municipalities and also perpendicularly above their cadastral area, secondarily the method of thresholding and the method of monitoring radiation ratios over residential and non-residential buildings were used. Due to the different radiometric and spatial resolution of the images, each of the secondary methods was applied only to images from one satellite. During the monitored periods, the level of light pollution fluctuated considerably, but in the long term, except in exceptional cases, it gradually increased. To monitor light pollution at the level of entire cities and city districts, the data available at the same time are sufficient. More suitable data were found to be those from the Suomi NPP satellite, whose advantage is compared to data from DMSP satellites primarily better radiometric and spatial resolution. To identify specific sources of radiation, data with more detailed resolution would be needed, although they can be obtained by aerial or unmanned imaging, but these methods are economically expensive and therefore unsuitable for regular use.
