Online gaming addiction: The role of avatars and sociability of gamers

Abstract:

Text představuje několik studií o závislosti na online počítačových hrách. Tento fenomén se stal předmětem zájmu jak odborné, tak širší veřejnosti, což vedlo k jeho zařazení jako Internet gaming disorder do páté revize Diagnostického a statistického manuálu mentálních poruch (DSM-5). Přestože se řada studií shodla, že pro některé nadměrné hráče získává hraní podobu behaviorální závislosti, je stále řada nejasností, které si zasluhují další zkoumání. Dizertace se skládá ze čtyř empirických článků, jedné teoretické studie a zastřešujícího článku. Zaměřuje se na závislost na onlie hraní a jak tato závislost je případně ovlivněna 1) roli vztahu mezi hráčem a avatarem (avataři jsou podstatným prvkem online her) 2) sociální motivací k hraní a sociální orientací hráčů. Empirické studie I a II zkoumaly vztah hráčů k jejich avatarům. Ukázalo se, že mladší hráči se identifikovali se svými avatary více a zároveň vykazovali vyšší skóre závislosti. Studie IV a V ukázaly, že sociální motivace k hraní nehraje u závislosti důležitou roli. Na druhé straně ale, hráčovy sociální dovednosti a základní sociální orientace představovaly protektivní faktor v případě vyšších dovedností a rizikový faktor v případě nižších dovedností.

Abstract:

The thesis presents several studies on online gaming addiction. This phenomenon attracted both public and academic attention and it led e.g. to inclusion into appendix of fifth revision of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as Internet gaming disorder. Although relatively large body of evidence has been accumulated that online gaming may take a form of behavioural addiction in some cases, some uncertainties remain. This thesis focuses on the role of player-avatar relationship and on players’ social skills and orientation and their potential role in gaming addiction. Thesis consist of four empirical journal articles, one theoretical book chapter, and a cover article. Study I and II found that the identification with an avatar was most typical for younger gamers. At the same time, younger gamers had the highest addiction score and there was a moderate correlation between addiction and identification with the avatar. Study IV and V found that social motivation for gaming was not important in explanation of addictive gaming. However, players’ social skills played an important role. Personal characteristic associated with healthy social functioning were a protective factors while lower social functioning was a risk factor of addiction.
