Using Artificial Intelligence in Experimenting with the Voice Recognition of French Rap Singers : Issues of Emphasizing Phonological Oppositions

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with the recognition of phonological oppositions of French using neural networks. It is about multi-stage testing of the applicability of artificial intelligence in sociophonetics. Automatically separated voice tracks from rap music recordings of selected performers from two centres of major phonologically distinct territories (Paris, Marseille) became the starting point.The aim of this interdisciplinary experimental study carried out in collaboration with a computer scientist from the NLP FI MU, is to perform a series of tests in the Resnet 18 neural network and evaluate the success rate in determining the speaker's place of origin without and after linguistic intervention in the training data.It is hypothesized that the decision criteria for the identification of the speaker's origin will become more evident to the AI after highlighting the main phonemic differences of the investigated areas (affrication of the dental sounds and loss of openness of the posterior middle vocals in Marseille, the opposite direction of the rotation of nasal sounds towards Paris).Three different types of software (EXMARaLDA, Audacity, Praat) were evaluated, and in the audio tracks in Audacity, a sample of about 1,300 major phonological oppositions in songs of two representative artists (Soprano from Marseille and Black M from Paris) was obtained by manual tagging. The applied linguistic methods have contributed to the assessment of the possibilities and limits of the dynamically developing informatics discipline.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá rozpoznáváním fonologických opozic francouzštiny pomocí neuronových sítí. Jedná se o vícestupňové testování využitelnosti umělé inteligence v sociofonetice. Východiskem se staly automaticky separované hlasové stopy z hudebních nahrávek rapových písní vybraných interpretů ze dvou center hlavních fonologicky odlišných teritorií (Paříž, Marseille). Cílem této mezioborové experimentální studie, provedené ve spolupráci s informatikem z NLP FI MU, je provedení série testů na neuronové síti Resnet 18 a evaluace úspěšnosti v určování místa původu mluvčích bez lingvistického zásahu do tréninkových dat a po něm. Je předpokládáno, že rozhodovací kritéria pro identifikaci původu mluvčího budou umělé inteligenci zřejmější po upozornění na hlavní fonematické odlišnosti zkoumaných oblastí (afrikace dentál a ztráta otevřenosti zadních středních vokálů v Marseille, opačný směr rotace nazál vůči Paříži). Evaluovány byly tři různé softwary (EXMARaLDA, Audacity, Praat) a na zvukových stopách v Audacity pak byl manuálním značkováním opatřen vzorek cca 1 300 hlavních fonologických opozic v písních dvou reprezentativních interpretů (Soprano z Marseille a Black M z Paříže). Aplikované lingvistické metody přispěly k posouzení možností a limitů dynamicky se rozvíjející informatické disciplíny.
