The Problem of the Socio-Economic Status of Women in the Arab World. A Comparative Case Study: Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou socioekonomického postavení žen v rámci současného arabského světa. Hlavním cílem práce je vymezení klíčových faktorů a jejich role při formování práv arabských žen, jakož i vývoje genderových nerovností v regionu. Při zpracování této studie se používají metody, jako jsou komparace, statistická analýza a syntéza na základě odborných článků a literatury, a také indukce a dedukce. První část této práce se zabývá základními teoriemi genderové nerovnosti a popisuje fenomén příjmové propasti mezi muži a ženami. Druhá část poskytuje přehled o postavení žen v předislámském arabském světě a o jejich právech podle islámských předpisů. Poslední část srovnává tři země arabského světa (Irák, Saúdskou Arábii a Tunisko) z hlediska přístupu žen ke vzdělání, povahy zákonů upravujících rodinná práva žen a míry jejich participace na trhu práce. V závěru je uvedeno shrnutí výsledků komparace mezi zkoumanými zeměmi a identifikovány hlavní faktory, které měly vliv na postavení žen a míru genderové diskriminace v arabské společnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the socio-economic status of women in the contemporary Arab world. The principal aim of the thesis is identifying the key factors and their role in the development of Arab women's rights, as well as the evolution of gender inequality in the region. The methods used in this study include comparison, statistical analysis and synthesis based on academic articles and literature, as well as induction and deduction. The first part of this paper deals with the basic theories of gender inequality and describes the phenomenon of gender pay gap. The second part provides an overview of the status of women in the pre-Islamic Arab world as well as their rights under Islamic law. The last part compares three Arab states (Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia) in terms of women's access to education, the structure of laws regulating women's family rights and the rate of their labour force participation. The conclusion provides an overview of the outcomes of the comparative analysis between the examined countries and identifies the main factors that have affected the status of women and the extent of gender discrimination in Arab society.
