Macroinvertebrates of the intermittent stream - course of a recolonisation after drought

Abstract:

ABSTRAKT Cílem této studie bylo vypracování rešerše k tématu rychlosti rekolonizace toku makrozoobentosem se zaměřením na vysychavé toky. Dalším cílem bylo zpracování pěti vzorků z období vyschnutí a znovuzaplavení intermitentní části toku (odebrané ve 2 – 4 týdenních intervalech od 1. 7. do 27. 9. 2005). Determinace byla provedena do vyšších taxonomických skupin a u řádů Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera a Trichoptera na úroveň čeledí, aby bylo možné porovnávat schopnost různých skupin rekolonizovat vyschlou část toku. Výzkum byl situován na Gránický potok, malý přítok řeky Dyje na hranici Národní parku Podyjí. Během léta intermitentní část toku každoročně vysychá. Ze zbylých tůní se odebíraly vzorky v období sucha, které trvalo poprvé 9 dní a podruhé 19 dní. Následně byly během měsíce a půl odebrány i tři vzorky během rekolonizace toku po znovuzaplavení. Vzorky byly odebírány semikvantitativní multihabitatovou metodou PERLA (vzorkování probíhalo po dobu tří minut pomocí tzv. „kick sampling“ metody tak, aby byly poměrně postiženy všechny habitaty vyskytující se na vzorkovaném úseku).Výsledky byly zpracovány v programu Microsoft Excel do jednoduchých tabulek a grafů. U většiny skupin vodních bezobratlých přítomných v toku, se během vysychání projevilo znatelné snížení abundancí. K úplnému vymizení došlo např. u čeledi Leptophlebiidae. Citlivost na tuto disturbanci prokázala i skupina Crustacea, jejíž abundance se snížila o tři řády. Schopnost rychlé rekolonizace prokázaly ve shodě s literárními údaji čeledi Chironomidae, Baetidae, Polycentropidae a Nemouridae, zřejmě díky své vysoké mobilitě. U některých skupin došlo naopak po období sucha ke zvýšení abundancí. Nárust abundance po znovuzaplavení a její následný pozvolný pokles byl u skupiny Oligochaeta zřejmě dán přítomností semiakvatických druhů jako je Eiseniella tetraedra (Savigny, 1826). U skupiny Coleoptera mohl být nárůst způsoben líhnutím larev zástupců čeledi Hydraenidae, které rychle kolonizovaly suché dno v období vyschnutí. Ačkoliv byl vliv dvou vyschnutí na strukturu populace výrazný, během měsíce a půl se podařilo většině skupin tok opět rekolonizovat, i když nedosáhly tak vysokých abundancí jaké byly zjištěny v tůních před vyschnutím.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliographic search for the theme “The rate of recolonization in stream by macrozoobenthos,” focused on intermittent streams. Another aim of this study was to process five samples taken from an intermittent part of a stream during both a dry and re-flooding period (samples were taken in 2 - 4 weeks intervals, from 1/7 to 27/9/ 2005). Identification of samples was carried out into higher taxonomical groups and for Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera to the family level to make comparison of ability of different groups to colonize the dry part of the stream. The study site was situated in the Gránický brook, a small tributary of the River Dyje on the border of the Podyjí National Park. The intermittent part of the brook dries up annually during summer. Samples from the dry period were taken from residual pools. The first summer drought took nine days and the second nineteen days, respectively. After that three samples were taken during six weeks after re-flooding of the brook, in the course of recolonisation. The samples were taken by PERLA semiquantitative multihabitat method (the sampling was conducted by a kick–sampling method for three minutes so that all habitats occurring in the brook were sampled proportionally). The results were processed to simple tables and graphs, using Microsoft Excel software. The apparent decrease in abundance of the most groups of aquatic macrointervertebrates in the stream was shown during the drying-up period. For example family Leptophlebiidae became extinct through the drought. Sensitivity to this disturbance was shown also by Crustacea group, which decreased in their abundance by three orders of magnitude. The ability of fast recolonization rate, in accordance with the data from literature, was demonstrated by the families Chironomidae, Baetidae, Polycetropodidae, and Nemouridae, probably due to high mobility of these groups. On the contrary, some of the groups showed increase in abundance after the drought. The increase in abundance after re-flooding and its subsequent gradual fall could be caused in Oligochaeta group by a higher occurrence of semiaquatic species such as Eiseniella tetraedra (Savigny, 1826). The increase in abundance of Coleoptera group could be caused by emerging of adults of Hydraenidae family, whose larvae colonize the dry substrate of the stream bed very fast during a dry period. The impact of the two droughts on the community structure was very distinctive, but the majority of the groups successfully recolonized the streambed during the following six weeks, although they did not reach as high abundances as in residual pools before the drought.
