Character Analysis: Juxtaposition of Aragorn's Inner and Outer Transformation on the Background of the War of the Ring

Anotácia:

Tato práce analyzuje Aragorna, důležitou postavu knihy Pán prstenů, s důrazem na jeho vnitřní a vnější proměny v průběhu děje. Jeho proměna je plná kontrastů a změny v Aragarnově vzhledu odráží jeho psychický stav. Aragorn je představen jako Chodec, tajemný samotář v obnošených šatech, ukrývající se ve stínech. Jeho vzhledu odpovídá nejistota a nedůvěra v sebe sama, stejně jako strach z vlastního selhání a tíha zodpovědnosti vycházející z činů jeho předka Isildura, který nedokázal zničit Prsten. Tyto pocity se prohlubují až do Boromirovy smrti. Od té chvíle však Aragorn nabývá zpět své sebevědomí, což se projevuje i na jeho vzhledu. Vypadá majestátněji a více královsky. Tato práce se zabývá i vztahem Aragorna k jeho meči Andúrilu, který k jeho vzhledu neodmyslitelně patří, jelikož také odráží jeho psychický stav a poukazuje na jeho královský původ. Práce se soustředí na jednotlivé události, kde se Aragornovy změny projevují, a na okolnosti způsobující a ovlivňující tyto proměny. Přeměna Chodce v krále je dovršena, když je Prsten zničen a Aragorn je korunován vládcem Gondoru.

Abstract:

This work analyses Aragorn as a crucial character in the Lord of the Rings, specifically it focuses on his inner and outer transformation throughout the story, full of contrasts and shifts of Aragorn’s appearance, which clearly reflects his mental state. Aragorn is introduced as a mysterious loner in worn clothes, hiding in shadow, presenting himself as Strider. This appearance is linked with his self-doubt and uncertainty, as well as his fear of failure and feeling of responsibility caused by the failure of his ancestor Isildur who failed to destroy the Ring. These feelings deepen till the death of Boromir, when they reach their peak. Since this moment Aragorn continually restores his confidence, and this change is reflected in his appearance that looks more and more kingly and majestic. The thesis focuses also on the link between Aragorn and his sword Andúril which is an inseparable part of his appearance that mirrors his mental state and demonstrates his royal descent. The thesis explores particular situations, when Aragorn’s change emerges, and the factors that influence and cause this change. Finally, the transformation of the character from Strider to the kingly character is completed when the Ring is destroyed and Aragorn is crowned the king of Gondor.
