A Model of Academic Procrastination Based on the Reactance Theory

Abstract:

The primary goal of the study was to test a set of hypotheses about the relationship between academic procrastination and psychological reactance, and to develop a causal model of situational procrastination and conscientious work. The study was based on the assumption that a deadline or the necessity to do some piece of work represents a situation of threatened or eliminated freedom of choice, which consequently produces a state of reactance in the individual. Reactance acts as an initiator of change in preferences, especially of the rise in the attractiveness of other activities. Seeking distractions, which leads to procrastination, is a means of re-establishment of the restricted freedoms. A set of measurement scales was distributed among a sample of 105 students. The scales measured subjective and objective procrastination, with its self-reported causes and emotional background, and psychological reactance, as well as ways in which it could manifest itself in behaviour. The hypothesis about the relationship between procrastination and reactance was confirmed, and the result of the study is a causal model of procrastination, which involves, apart from the dimension of psychological reactance, also he dimension of anxiety, achievement motivation, and task aversiveness. By these variables the research participants could be divided into four different types: conscientious non-procrastinators, adapted procrastinators, non-adapted procrastinators, and non-activation procrastinators.

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá testovaním hypotéz o vzťahu akademickej prokrastinácie a psychologickej reaktancie a následným vypracovaním kauzálneho modelu situačnej prokrastinácie a svedomitej práce na úlohe. Štúdia vychádzala z predpokladu, že stanovenie termínu či nutnosti vykonať nejakú prácu predstavuje situáciu obmedzenia či eliminácie slobody výberu, čoho dôsledkom je vyvolanie stavu reaktancie. Tá pôsobí ako spúšťač situačnej zmeny preferencií, predovšetkým zvýšenia atraktívnosti iných aktivít. Vyhľadávanie rozptýlení, vedúce k prokrastinácii, je spôsobom opätovného nastolenia uzurpovanej slobody. Vzorke 105 študentov bola rozdaná sada dotazníkov merajúca subjektívnu i objektívnu mieru prokrastinácie, jej príčiny a prežívanie, ďalej rysovú reaktanciu a spôsoby, ktorými sa môže odraziť v správaní. Hypotéza o vzťahu reaktancie a prokrastinácie sa potvrdila a výsledkom štúdie je kauzálny model prokrastinácie, zahŕňajúci okrem reaktancie aj dimenziu úzkosti, výkonovej motivácie a averzie voči úlohe. Podľa týchto premenných bolo možné účastníkov výskumu rozdeliť do štyroch typov: svedomitých neprokrastinátorov, adaptovaných prokrastinátorov, neadaptovaných prokrastinátorov a neaktivovaných prokrastinátorov.
