Conceptions of American Indian Sovereignty in the Writings of Laura Cornelius Kellogg and Gertrude Bonnin

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the writings of two important female Native activists of the early-twentieth century, Laura Cornelius Kellogg and Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (Zitkala-Ša), in regard to American Indian sovereignty and assimilation. It concludes that while Kellogg saw the answer to the "Indian problem" as rooted in "reservation-based" regeneration, Zitkala-Ša felt that a "right-based" approach would better enable Indians to overcome the deleterious effects of centuries of Euro-American colonialism.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou literárních děl dvou významných indiánských aktivistek počátku dvacátého století, Laury Cornelius Kellogg a Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (Zitkala-Ša), s ohledem na suverenitu a asimilaci amerických Indiánů. Tato práce dochází k závěru, že zatímco Kellogg viděla řešení "indiánského problému" v regeneraci rezervací, Zitkala-Ša se domnívala, že postup "založený na právech" by Indiánům lépe umožnil překonat zhoubný dopad staletí dlouhého euro-amerického kolonialismu.
