Breeding preferences of songbirds in suburban landscapes

Abstract:

Dutinoví hnízdiči jsou často vystaveni velkému riziku při hnízdění, a to kvůli značnému úbytku přirozených dutin. Instalace hnízdních budek napomáhá těmto pěvcům zvýšit jejich hnízdní možnosti a tím i hustotu hnízdících párů. Každý druh má odlišnou preferenci ve výběru hnízdní budky. Tato preference může být ovlivněna mnoha faktory, jako je například druhové a věkové složení porostu a design budek. Předkládaná práce se zaměřuje na terénní testování preference náhradních hnízdišť a typu porostu v rámci vybraného příměstského lesa v Plesné. Na 16 lokalitách bylo umístěno 32 budek. Na každé z lokalit byly umístěny na strom vedle sebe dva typy budek. Jedna budka byla dřevěná a druhá dřevo-betonová. Budky byly v průběhu hnízdní sezony pravidelně monitorovány. Mezi nejčastěji hnízdící druhy patřila sýkora koňadra a sýkora modřinka, které měly odlišné preference ve výběru typu budky. Sýkory koňadry preferovaly budky dřevěné, zato sýkory modřinky budky dřevo-betonové. Tato rozdílná preference mohla být dána i odlišnou velikostí a barvou obou typů budek. Zajímavým zjištěním bylo, že v budkách dřevěných bylo vyšší procento přeživších mláďat oproti budkám dřevo-betonovým. Vlastnosti budky dřevo-betonové jsou mnohdy popisovány jako stabilnější a výhodnější vůči vnějšímu prostředí i případné predaci, avšak v úspěšnosti na odchov mláďat tyto vlastnosti evidentně nemusí hrát až takovou roli. Obsazení jednotlivých budek i následná proporce přeživších mláďat mohly být ovlivněny jednak dostupností potravy na různých stanovištích, a jednak mezidruhovou konkurencí mezi oběma druhy sýkor. Na hnízdění a jeho úspěšnost může mít tedy vliv mnoho faktorů. Tyto faktory by bylo dobré nadále studovat a zakomponovat do managementu příměstské krajiny.

Abstract:

Cavity nesters are often at great risk when nesting due to the significant loss of natural cavities. The installation of nest boxes helps these birds to increase their nesting opportunities and thus the density of nesting pairs. Each species has a different preference in nest box selection. This preference can be influenced by many factors, such as species and age composition of the stand and the design of the boxes. The present work focuses on field testing the preference for alternative nesting sites and stand type within a selected suburban forest in Plesna. Thirty-two boxes were placed at 16 sites. At each site, two types of boxes were placed side by side on a tree. One box was wooden and the other was wood-concrete. The boxes were monitored regularly during the breeding season. The most common nesting species were the Horned Tit and the Blue Tit, which had different preferences in the choice of box type. Horned Tits preferred wooden boxes, whereas Blue Tits preferred wood-concrete boxes. This difference in preference could also be due to the different size and colour of the two types of boxes. An interesting finding was that wooden boxes had a higher percentage of surviving chicks compared to wood-concrete boxes. The characteristics of the wood-concrete box are often described as more stable and more advantageous to the external environment and possible predation, but these characteristics clearly may not play such a large role in the success rate for rearing chicks. The occupancy of individual boxes and the subsequent proportions of surviving chicks may have been influenced both by the availability of food in different habitats and by interspecific competition between the two species of tits. Thus, many factors may influence nesting and its success. It would be useful to continue to study these factors and incorporate them into the management of the suburban landscape.
