The development of relations between Norway and the European Union after Brexit

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vývojem vztahů mezi Norskem a Evropskou unií po Brexitu. Vzájemné vztahy mezi oběma aktéry sahají dávno do minulosti. Ačkoli Norsko není členem Evropské unie, sdílí s ní výjimečné a velmi blízké vztahy. Jak Norsko, tak Evropská unie jsou významnými aktéry nejen na evropské, ale dokonce na světové scéně. Tato práce má za cíl odhalit, jakým směrem se vyvíjí vztahy mezi Norskem a Evropskou unií po Brexitu a rovněž zjistit, jak Brexit ovlivnil vzájemné vztahy. Cíl práce je dosažen pomocí stanovené metodiky s využitím případové studie. Práce je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První kapitola představuje teoretické východisko práce a týká se vnější diferenciace Evropské unie, druhá kapitola zobrazuje vývoj vzájemných vztahů po Brexitu a třetí, závěrečná, kapitola odhaluje dopady Brexitu na vzájemné vztahy mezi Norskem a Evropskou unií. Z práce vyplývá, že důležité oblasti spolupráce mezi oběma aktéry se váží především na otázky bezpečnosti a životního prostředí a dopady Brexitu ovlivnily zejména vzájemné vnímání obou aktérů a jejich společné vazby a spolupráce v určitých oblastech. Tyto závěry představují skutečnost, že vývoj vztahů mezi Norskem a Evropskou unií nabyl v posledních letech kvůli situaci v Evropě na dynamice. Ačkoliv se zdá, že se Norsko v následujících letech nestane plnohodnotným členem Evropské unie, je prozatím pro obě strany velmi výhodné být blízkými partnery a vzájemně spolupracovat na společných tématech.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the development of relations between Norway and the European Union after Brexit. The mutual relations between the two actors go back a long way. Although Norway is not a member of the European Union, it shares an exceptional, and very close, relationship with it. Both Norway and the European Union are major players not only on the European, but even on the world stage. This thesis aims to uncover the direction in which the relationship between Norway and the European Union is evolving after Brexit and also to find out how Brexit has affected the relationship. The aim of the thesis is achieved through the established methodology using a case study. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents the theoretical background of the thesis and relates to the external differentiation of the European Union, the second chapter shows the development of the mutual relations after Brexit and the third and final chapter reveals the impacts of Brexit on the mutual relations between Norway and the European Union. The thesis shows that important areas of cooperation between the two actors are mainly related to security and environmental issues and the impacts of Brexit have mainly influenced the mutual perception of the two actors and their common ties and cooperation in certain areas. These conclusions represent the fact that the development of relations between Norway and the European Union has gained momentum in recent years due to the situation in Europe. Although it seems that Norway will not become a full member of the European Union in the coming years, for the time being it is very beneficial for both sides to be close partners and to cooperate on common issues.
