Psychological corelates of chess sport in the adolescence

Abstract:

Tato studie se zaměřuje na osobnostní charakteristiky adolescentů, kteří hrají šach, v porovnání s dalšími stejně starými sportovci a nesportovci. Zabývá se aspekty dlouhodobé únavy a syndromem přetrénování, které mohly být zapříčiněny nadměrnou zátěží vyplývající z tréninku a z účasti na turnajích. Při porovnávání daných skupin byl nalezen významný rozdíl v oblasti depresivních stavů (definovaných anhedonií a sníženým sebehodnocením), ve které šachisté dosahovali nejvyšších výsledků, a v oblasti otevřenosti z osobnostního dotazníku BFI. Šachisté v této studii nevykazovali aspekty přetrénování, a přestože se domnívají, že k dobrému výkonu v šachu pomáhá nízká míra neuroticismu, vysoká míra extraverze, otevřenosti a svědomitosti, výsledky naznačují pozitivní vztah s neuroticismem a přívětivostí.

Abstract:

This study is focused on the characteristics of adolescents, playing chess. They are compared with the sportsmen and non-sportsmen of the same age. It deals with the aspects of long-term fatigue and overtraining syndrome, which could be caused by the excessive stress from trainings and tournaments. The significant difference between the groups was found in the depressive state domain (defined by anhedonia and reduced self-esteem), where chess players reached highest scores, and also in the domain of openness from the BFI questionnaire. Chess players did not show any signs of overtraining. Players and trainers also think, that low level of neuroticism and high level of extraversion, openness and conscientiousness help to achieve the high performance. Nevertheless the results show positive relation to neuroticism and agreeableness.
