Reciprocity and its interpretation in Czech: an experimental study

Abstract:

V češtině se ve větách s recipročním významem typicky užívá tzv. reflexiv s-řady, resp. výrazů se, si, sebe, sobě, sebou. V zásadě však reciprocitu lze vyjádřit také pomocí výrazu jeden druhý. Tato práce se zabývá interpretací českých vět s těmito dvěma typy recipročních výrazů, a to na pozadí formálně-sémantických analýz pro angl. each other a the others. Základem práce je experiment ověřující přijatelnost českých recipročních výrazů v silně či slabě recipročních kontextech rodilými mluvčími. Hlavním cílem práce je potvrzení hypotézy o přijatelnosti výrazu jeden druhý ve větách se silně reciproční interpretací. Dílčím cílem je ověřit teorii o nemožnosti užití recipročních výrazů ve větách s univerzálním distributivním kvantifikátorem.

Abstract:

Reflexives, in particular se, si, sebe, sobě, sebou, are typically used in Czech sentences with reciprocal meaning. Basically, reciprocity in Czech can be expressed using the expression jeden druhý. The thesis focuses on the interpretation of Czech sentences with those two types of expressions on the basis of formal semantic analyses of English expressions each other and the others. The basis of this work is an experiment verifying acceptability of reciprocals in strong or weak reciprocal contexts by native speakers. The major aim is to confirm the hypothesis testing the acceptability of the expression jeden druhý in strong reciprocal contexts. A partial goal is to verify the theory of impossibility of using reciprocals with universal distributive quantifier.
