Soap opera as popular culture: interpretation through the theory of Adorno and Bourdieu

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se pokouší interpretovat současnou soap operu Ulice pomocí konceptů v teoriích dvou nejvýznamnějších teoretiků kultury 20. století Adorna a Bourdieuho. Interpretace soap opery pomocí Adornovy a Bourdieuho teorie jsou zasazeny do diskurzu o dichotomii vysoké a nízké kultury, ukazuje různé pohledy a historii rozlišování mezi vysokou a nízkou kulturou. Práce je doplněna o současný výzkum soap oper v rámci feministické kritiky médií, jež umožňují více proniknout do samotného žánru soap opery. Interpretace skrze teorie Adorna a Bourdieuho představují odlišné pohledy na soap operu Ulice, práce tedy prezentuje dvě možné perspektivy na fenomén soap opery. Optikou Adornovy teorie je Ulice interpretována jako nízká z důvodu jejího zařazení do populární kultury. Z pohledu Bourdieuho teorie je interpretována jako pod nadvládou vysoké kultury a mužské kultury, symbolicky označována jako nízká.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis tries to interpret the current soap opera Ulice (The Street) through concepts in the theories of two major theorists of culture in 20th century, Adorno and Bourdieu. Interpretation of the soap operas by Adorno and Bourdieu theories are set within the discourse about the dichotomy of high and low culture, showing different views of history and the distinction between high and low culture. This bachelor's thesis is supplemented by the current research on soap operas in the feminist critique of the media, allowing more to get into the genre of soap opera. Interpretation through the theories of Adorno and Bourdieu represent different perspectives on the soap opera Ulice and the work presents two possible perspectives on the phenomenon of soap operas. Through the view of Adorno's theory Ulice is interpreted as low culture as a result of its classification as popular culture. From the perspective of Bourdieu's theory is interpreted as the domination of high culture and male culture, symbolically labeled as low.
