Certain image themes in film interpretations of Twelve Angry Men

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá reflexí vybraných ideových motivů filmových realizací Dvanácti rozhněvaných mužů. Největší prostor je věnován klasickému americkému filmu Sydneyho Lumeta z roku 1957, který je považován za dílo prakticky definující žánr soudního dramatu. Na základě předložení a konfrontace různých odborných interpretací se v hlavní kapitole práce snažím ozřejmit, do jaké míry se v díle projevují témata daná sociálním a politickým kontextem USA padesátých let. Mezi tato témata patří obecné pojetí principů demokracie, role lidského faktoru v justičním systému, rasová problematika, studená válka či štvavá politika mccarthysmu. Práce se zabývá také hodnocením míry idealizace. Na několika místech se zmiňuji také o americkém remaku 12 rozhněvaných mužů od Williama Friedkina z roku 1997. Jelikož je tento film až na některé změny obsahově prakticky identický jako film Lumetův, je mu věnován pouze marginální prostor. Naopak pojetí námětu ruským nacionalisticky smýšlejícím režisérem Nikitou Michalkovem, je v jeho filmu 12 natolik svérázné, že jsou některé zásadní myšlenkové motivy v ostrém kontrastu k oběma americkým verzím. Rozborem těchto motivů a jejich konfrontací s americkými díly se zabývá poslední kapitola práce.

Abstract:

In my thesis I deal with reflection of certain image themes in film interpretations of Twelve Angry Men. Most space is dedicated to the classic American work of Sydney Lumet from 1957, which is considered a piece practically defining the genre of courtroom drama. In Chapter One, I try to manifest up to which extent do the issues determined by social and political context of USA of the 1950s emerge, based on presenting and comparing various expert interpretations. These issues include the general concept of democratic principles, the human factor in judicial system, the question of races, the Cold War or the victimizing McCarthyism. The thesis is also concerned with evaluating the degree of idealisation. On a number of occasions, I also mention the American remake of 12 Angry Men by William Friedkin from 1997. Because this film is, with a few alterations, intenionally based on Lumet’s film, it is only given a marginal space. On the other hand, the interpretation by the Russian nationalist Nikita Michalkov in his film is so distinctive, that some image themes contrast sharply with both American versions. The last Chapter is concerned with analysis of these themes and their confrontation with the American productions.
