Application of Smart City methodology in Afghanistan

Abstract:

The world is facing an increase in population and governments, as managers of countries and cities, must propose appropriate solutions to design and implement high-level urbanization and service delivery. We need technology, data management and analysis, and resources to implement smart cities. There are various challenges and concerns in every corner of the world to implement smart cities such as population growth, greater demand for basic services, greater need for public services, traffic control, health and education, management Human Resources and Infrastructure. This thesis aims to determine a way how to help the city smarter by implementing a smart traffic system for having better security and traffic among urban areas in Afghanistan. Asan Khedmat as a public -service provider company accepted to implement this idea. This thesis examines the dimensions and components of a smart city that the more attention is paid to these dimensions, the smarter the city or the higher the level of smartness. These dimensions are Smart Economy, Smart Mobility, Smart Environment, Smart People, Smart Living, and Smart Governance. The next step is to examine the smart city projects around the world, what role and benefits each of these projects can have to the community. These projects are: •Smart City of Orlando with Traffic management system project •Automated License Plate Reading in the USA •The smart city of Barcelona with Open Data solution •Automatic Number Plate Recognition in Spain •License Plate Recognition in India •The Smart City of Masdar in United Arab of Emirates The following is a general overview of the ICT infrastructure in Afghanistan to see what is the level of technology in Afghanistan and how is the information technology accessibility is available in Afghanistan. By gathering information about smart city implementation, suggested focussing on the most important issues that can be proposed and solved via smart city projects in Afghanistan. Because this is the first research on smart cities in Afghanistan, it can be useful to all researchers and IT service providers who want to solve plans and develope ICT solutions by using technology in Afghanistan. On the other hand, according to the specific and strategic situation of Afghanistan, as much as technology plays a role in managing the country, it will contribute to its stability and security.
