Supporting children at risk within inclusive school environment

Abstract:

Submitted dissertation outlines the subject of a complex inclusive issue for the needs of children at risk during the secondary education, and that is from the children's perspective as well as from all the key members of the educative system, who help create child’s environment. This work is based on an informed inclusive intervention 3P (strengthening, support and leading) and continues with the psychological concepts of development: deficiency (D) needs and being (B) needs, self-efficacy, self-actualization and on the theory of non-violent communication and peak experiences. These humanistic theories of Maslow, Rosenberg and Rogers that have a long-term absence in educational environment especially concerning children at risk, together with the concept of complex collaboration create a saturating environment that incites risk reduction and increases resilience and resources for children at risk in school environment. The work points to the gap in Slovak school environment particularly the inability of identifying the resources and risks in children and comprehending the difference of child’s, teacher’s and other involved actors' interpretation of theirs' and others’ needs and their mutual cooperation managed by a professional team. Research forming a sequential design, based on a quantitative analysis of standardized questionnaire Prevention of Behavior Disorders at School by Vojtová and Fučík (2012), whose results were compared with a standardized sample in Czech Republic. For the quantitative part there follows a whole range of qualitative techniques: focus groups and unstructured questionnaire of needs and risks in three examined classrooms of 5th graders in two primary schools in SR and semi-structured conversation with class teachers according to part of the questionaire. Validity and reliability of methodology was based on the triangulation of techniques and resources and on the peer debriefing with inclusive team. The results of the work highlights the absence of B-needs and B-values in school environment, bipolar relationship between the teacher and the pupil, some children at risk were detected, whom the school does not identify anymore. Similar to Czech Republic, researched students sense, they are not important and they feel the prioritization of other students. This, for them as well as for the teachers, becomes the risk of their own unfulfilled D-needs and an insufficient self-efficacy and support. Common peak experiences are missing in schools, adding to it the insufficient collaboration of all the individual school staff. Trying to highlight the need for an early identification and intervention in the grade school while not underestimating the external satisfaction of children is an important part of this thesis as well. These recommendations are leading to a complex joint and inclusive work of the external and internal areas of school and demands for an open communication, reflection and support - facilitative learning, supporting relationships, reflection in circle, team-work in class, expressive prevention programs, intergenerational activities, regular sessions and inclusive team in school.

Abstract:

Predkladaná dizertačná práca prináša tému komplexnej inkluzívnej problematiky potrieb u detí v riziku na sekundárnom stupni vzdelávania a to tak z pohľadu detí, ako aj z pohľadu všetkých kľúčových aktérov školy, ktorí spolupracujú na vytváraní prostredia okolo dieťaťa. Práca vychádza z inkluzívnej informovanej intervencie 3P (posilňovanie, podpora a prevádzanie) a nadväzuje na psychologické koncepty rozvoja D (deficiency) a B (being) potrieb, sebaúčinnosti, sebaaktualizácie a teóriu nenásilnej komunikácie a vrcholových zážitkov. Tieto humanistické princípy Maslowa, Rosenberga a Rogersa dlhodobo chýbajú v praxi školského prostredia obzvlášť v starostlivosti o detí v riziku. Spolu s konceptom komplexnej spolupráce (collaboration) vytvárajú prostredie saturujúce a podnecujúce znižovanie rizík a zvyšujú rezilienciu a zdroje u detí v školskom prostredí. Práca poukazuje aj na medzeru v školskom prostredí na Slovensku a to v neschopnosti identifikovať zdroje a riziká detí a porozumieť vzťahu medzi chápaním potrieb žiaka (triedy), triedneho učiteľa a ostatných aktérov a ich vzájomnú spoluprácu manažovanú odborným tímom. Výskumné šetrenie predstavuje sekvenčný dizajn výskumu, ktorý vychádza z kvantitatívnej analýzy štandardizovaného dotazníka Předcházení problémům v chování žáků podľa Vojtovej a Fučíka (2012), ktorého výsledky boli komparované so štandardizovanou vzorkou v ČR. Na kvantitatívnu časť nadviazal celý rad kvalitatívnych techník: focus group a neštruktúrovaný dotazník potrieb a rizík v troch skúmaných triedach 5. ročníka na dvoch základných školách SR a pološtruktúrované rozhovory s triednymi učiteľmi podľa oblastí školského života štandardizovaného dotazníka z kvantitatívnej časti výskumu. Triangulácia metód a techník bola doplnená aj o validizáciu s odborným tímom na škole. Výsledky práce poukazujú na absenciu B-potrieb a B-hodnôt v školskom prostredí, bipolárne vzťahy učiteľ – žiak, objavili sa viaceré skryté rizikové deti, ktoré škola nijako nezachytila. Skúmaní žiaci, podobne ako v ČR, majú pocit, že nie sú dôležití, a že iní žiaci sú uprednostňovaní, čo poukazuje podobne ako u učiteľov, na riziko nenaplnených vlastných D-potrieb a na nedostatočnú sebaúčinnosť a podporu. V školách chýbajú spoločné vrcholové zážitky, čomu pridáva ešte aj nedostatočná spolupráca jednotlivých aktérov školy. Práca poukazuje na potrebu skorej identifikácie a intervencie už na I. stupni, pričom sa zdôrazňuje, aby sa nepreceňovala vonkajšia spokojnosť detí. Odporúčania smerujú k spoločnej komplexnej a inkluzívnej práci vonkajších a vnútorných zložiek školy a vyžaduje si otvorenú komunikáciu, reflexiu a podporu – facilitatívne učenie, pomáhajúce vzťahy, kruhové reflexie, skupinovú prácu na vyučovaní, expresívne preventívne programy, medzigeneračné aktivity, preventívne sústredenia a funkčný odborný tím na škole.
