Czech Consumers and Their Awareness of Animal Welfare as Reflected by Purchase Preferences

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá českými spotřebiteli a welfare hospodářských zvířat na pozadí nákupu živočišných produktů. Autorka se ptá na postoje zvolené skupiny spotřebitelů k welfare zvířat a jejich nákupní chování. Při hodnocení vychází z konceptu etického nakupování. První část práce popisuje koncept welfare, etické aspekty vztahu člověka a zvířete, koncept etického a společensky odpovědného nakupování a situaci welfare v konvenčních a ekologických chovech zvířat. Uvádí též přehled výsledků některých zahraničních výzkumů. V druhé části se autorka zaměřuje na kvalitativní výzkum skupiny českých spotřebitelů kupujících jehněčí maso z tradičně chovaných ovcí. Popisuje jejich motivace k tomuto etickému nákupu a zjišťuje, že všichni spotřebitelé se nechovají eticky. Výzkum se dále dotýká vlastností welfare produktů, spotřebitelské ochoty platit, informovanosti o welfare nebo nabídky živočišných produktů na českém trhu. Na závěr autorka vytvořila typologii spotřebitelů dle jejich vyjádřených postojů k welfare a nákupního chování.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with Czech consumers and their awareness of animal welfare as reflected by purchase preferences. The author asks a chosen group of consumers about their attitudes towards animal welfare and purchase behaviour. Her evaluation is based on the concept of ethical consumerism. The first chapter introduces the concept of welfare, ethical aspects of the human-animal relationship, the concept of ethical consumerism and socially responsible buying and situation of welfare in conventional and organic animal husbandry. It mentions an overview of some findings of abroad researches as well. In the second part of this thesis the author focuses on the qualitative research of a chosen group of consumers purchasing lamb meat from traditionally bred sheep. She describes their motivations to this ethical purchasing behaviour and finds out that every consumer does not behave ethically. The research further mentions qualities of welfare animal products, consumer´s willingness to pay, awareness of animal welfare or the Czech supply of animal products. In conclusion the author constructed a consumer typology in terms of their expressed attitudes towards welfare and purchasing behaviour.
