Aquaponic cultivation as a business opportunity

Abstract:

V posledních letech se na poli pěstitelství stala velmi populární metoda aquaponického pěstování. Jedná se o kombinaci chovu ryb a bezpůdního pěstování rostlin. Cílem práce je zhodnotit realizovatelnost podnikatelského nápadu aquaponického pěstování jahod z pohledu připravenosti místního, stále velmi tradičního, prostředí. Aby bylo možné podnikatelský nápad zhodnotit, vymezila jsem tři největší překážky pro tento druh podnikání – zájem spotřebitelů, finanční stránku podnikání a současné technologické možnosti. Zájem spotřebitelů jsem zjišťovala pomocí dotazníku směřovaným na zákazníky supermarketu, kteří nakupují jahody. Finanční stránku jsem zhodnotila na základě finanční analýzy a současné technologické možnosti jsem diskutovala s odborným poradcem na pěstování jahod, Adri Streefem. Závěrem mé práce je, že je finančně možné tímto způsobem jahody pěstovat a mezi spotřebiteli poptávka po organických jahodách je, navíc, když jsou produktem aquaponie, avšak velkou překážkou je fakt, že dosud není efektivním způsobem zvládnut boj s chorobami a škůdci v aquaponiích, což přináší velká rizika. Aquaponie pro pěstování jahod má velký potenciál do budoucna, ale v současné chvíli ji jako podnikatelský záměr doporučit nemohu.

Abstract:

In recent years, the aquaponic cultivation method has become a very popular in the field of cultivation. It is a combination of fish farming and soilless plant farming. The aim of this work is to analyze whether this new innovation is a good business opportunity for strawberry growing. In order to evaluate the business opportunity, I have identified the three biggest obstacles to this type of business – interest of consumers, the financial side of the business and current technological possibilities. I examined interest of consumers using a questionnaire aimed at supermarket targeted towards customers who buy strawberries. I evaluated the financial side based on financial analysis and I discussed the current technological possibilities with an expert consultant for growing strawberries, Adri Streef. The conclusion of this paper is that it is financially possible to grow in this way and there is a demand among consumers for organic strawberries, which are the products of aquaponics, but a big obstacle is the fact that there is no reliable defense against diseases and pests in aquaponics. Aquaponic systems for growing strawberries has great potential for the future, but at the moment I cannot recommend it as a business.
