Advance lidar data processing in the urban environment

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the detection possibilities of objects of the means of transport in the urban environment from airborne laser scanning data. Its main goal is to develop a scheme of processing which would be capable to identify features of means of transport in the point cloud from laser scanning in an automatic or semi-automatic way. In the beginning of the thesis the work followed out with the creation of the overview of commercial and open-source software dealing with the processing of point cloud data which could include tools for object detection or classification. In the next step was the formation of the methodology of the scheme of the detection processing which can detect various types of vehicle objects. The proposed method of detection was primarily based on the combination of point cloud segmentation of the areas with high potential of vehicle occurrence and the defining of dimensionality parameters of analysed object. The detected objects of transport were divided into three groups which included cars, another group consisted of buses and trolleybuses and the last group was made of trams. Subsequently the pilot version of proposed processing was tested on the data of the area of Brno city centre which was provided by Global Change Research Institute CAS. The results of the detection were shown as promising with adequate values of accuracy for sparse point cloud on which the proposed processing was tested. Finally, as an extra part was also proposed the procedure of counting of the identified objects, which showed the capabilities of how it could be possible to determine the approximate number of vehicles in the data. Nevertheless, there is still a space for its improvement. The proposed processing of detection would be desirably needed to be tested more in the other areas than urban environment, in any case it has a great potential, and it can be possible to implement into real use in the future.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá možnosťami detekcie objektov dopravných prostriedkov v mestskom prostredí v dátach z leteckého laserového skenovania. Jej hlavným cieľom bolo vytvoriť návrh postupu, ktorý by bol schopný automaticky alebo poloautomaticky identifikovať prvky reprezentujúce dopravné prostriedky v mračne bodov z laserového skenovania. Na úvod práce sa pristúpilo k vytvoreniu prehľadu komerčných a open-source softvérov poskytujúce riešenia pri spracovaní mračna bodov s možnosťami detekcie alebo klasifikácie objektov. Ďalším krokom bola tvorba metodiky návrhu postupu spracovania detekcie rôznych objektov vozidiel. Navrhnutá metóda detekcie bola primárne založená na kombinácii segmentácie mračna bodov na oblasti s potenciálnym výskytom vozidiel a určení parametrov dimenzionality skúmaného objektu. Detegované objekty dopravy boli rozdelené na tri skupiny, ktoré zahŕňali autá, ďalej autobusy a trolejbusy dokopy a poslednou skupinou boli električky. Pilotné spracovanie návrhu bolo vyskúšané v prostredí centra mesta Brno na poskytnutých dátach od Ústavu výzkumu globální změny AV ČR. Výsledky detekcie sa ukázali ako sľubné s dobrou úspešnosťou pre riedke mračno bodov, na ktorých bol postup testovaný. Ako doplnok sa taktiež navrhol postup výpočtu jednotlivých identifikovaných objektov, ktorý ukázal možnosti akým spôsobom sa dajú určiť počty vozidiel z mračna bodov. Existuje v ňom ale priestor na zlepšenie. Navrhnutý postup detekcie by bolo vhodné ďalej otestovať aj na iných oblastiach než mestské prostredie, každopádne má ale veľký potenciál a je možné ho v budúcnosti implementovať do reálneho použitia.
