The relationship of impulsivity to selected personality characteristics in students of military leadership

Abstract:

Moderní armáda se zaměřuje na minimalizaci rizik, obzvláště v oblastech leadershipu. Impulzivita lídrů je proto v tomto prostředí významným tématem, kterému je potřebné porozumět. Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce bylo zmapování vztahu impulzivity s ostatními osobnostními charakteristikami dle teorie Big five. Tyto vztahy však mohou být rozdílné u specifických vzorků, proto tato studie zkoumala studenty vojenského leadeshipu (N = 63) ve věku 21 až 26 let (r = 21,7 let; 34,9 % žen a 65,1 % mužů). Explorativním cílem bylo ověření poměrně nových českých překladů použitých dotazníků UPPS-P, BIS-11 a BFI-2 u specifického vzorku. K ověření výzkumných cílů byl použit kvantitativní výzkumný design. Data byla sbírána v rámci projektu Tvorba modelových situací, umožňující pokrýt spektrum potenciálních zátěžových situací vznikajících v podmínkách moderních operací na Univerzitě obrany v Brně. Výsledky ukázaly, že faktor svědomitosti významně souvisí s úrovní impulzivity. U jiných faktorů Big five nebyl nalezen významný vztah s impulzivitou. Byla zjištěna také významnost dalšího zkoumání faktoru Sensation Seeking u této skupiny. Tato studie se snaží rozšířit poznatky o dané problematice pro další zkoumání.

Abstract:

The modern military focuses on minimizing risks, especially in the areas of leadership. The impulsivity of leaders is therefore an important topic in this environment that needs to be understood. The main goal of this master's thesis was to map the relationship of impulsivity with other personality characteristics according to the Big Five theory. However, these relationships may be different for specific samples, so this study examined sample of students of military leadership (N = 63) aged 21 to 26 years (r = 21.7 years; 34.9% women and 65.1% men). The exploratory goal was to verify used questionnaires UPPS-P, BIS-11 and BFI-2 for the specific sample, because they have a relatively new Czech translation. A quantitative research design was used to verify the research objectives. The data were collected within the project Creation of model situations, enabling to cover the spectrum of potential stressful situations arising in the conditions of modern operations at the University of Defense in Brno. The results showed that the conscientiousness factor is significantly related to the level of impulsivity. No such a strong relationship was found with impulsivity for other Big five factors. The significance of further investigation of the Sensation Seeking factor in this group was also found. This study seeks to expand knowledge of the issue for further investigation.
