Analysis of Private Banking in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje privátnímu bankovnictvím, jehož význam stoupá v souvislosti s růstem bohatství ve společnosti. Cílem této práce je ověřit platnost tří hypotéz. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a empirickou. Teoretická část objasňuje základní pojmy z oblasti privátního bankovnictví stejně jako poznatky potřebné k analýze investičních portfolií pro privátní klienty. Empirická část obsahuje komparativní analýzu aktuální produktové nabídky bank poskytujících privátní bankovnictví na českém trhu. Tato část je také zaměřena na porovnání výkonnosti českých a švýcarských privátních bank podle dat z roku 2018. Závěrečná část práce se zabývá sestavením investičních portfolií s různým stupněm podstupovaného rizika v období 2015–2019. Z ověření platnosti první hypotézy vyplývá, že univerzální banky v České republice nabízí komplexnější služby privátního bankovnictví než banky specializující se přímo na tuto oblast. Na základě testování druhé hypotézy ukazatelem ROAE lze konstatovat, že české privátní banky jsou ziskovější, něž privátní banky ve Švýcarsku. Výsledek ověřování třetí hypotézy potvrzuje vyšší výkonnost agresivního portfolia sledovanou Sharpeovým poměrem v období ekonomického růstu, než jaké dosahují portfolia s nižší úrovní rizika.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on private banking whose importance has risen along with the wealth growth. The aim of the thesis is to confirm three hypotheses. The thesis is divided into theoretical and empirical part. The former describes the key terms from the area of private banking as well as the concepts needed to analyse the investment portfolios compiled for the private clients. The empirical part contains the comparative analysis of the current product offer of banks operating in the Czech private banking sector. It also focuses on the evaluation of Czech and Swiss private bank performance based on data from 2018. The final part of the paper is devoted to the assembling of portfolios with a different level of risk in the period 2015–2019. The validation of the first hypothesis shows that universal banks in the Czech Republic offer more complex private banking services than banks specializing in this area. Based on testing the second hypothesis with the ROAE indicator, it can be stated that Czech private banks are more profitable than private banks in Switzerland. The result received from the examination of the third hypothesis confirms higher performance of the aggressive portfolio based on the Sharpe ratio in the period of economic growth than lower-risk portfolios achieve.
