Relationship between propensity to lie and styles of handling conflicts

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit vztahy mezi čtyřmi styly řešení konfliktů a tendencí ke lhaní. Jsou sledovány styly sjednocující, ochotný, dominantní a vyhýbavý. Tendence ke lhaní je zjišťována na základě lhaní každodenním životě (obecné lhaní) a lhaní ve vážné situaci. Předchozí studie zjistily významné vztahy mezi tendencí ke lhaní u kompetitivního a na sebe zaměřeného jednání nebo vnímání konfliktu. V této studii jsou propojeny poznatky o orientaci na sociální hodnoty, konfliktních rámcích a mentálních modelech konfliktů s konfliktním chováním, které je zastoupeno čtyřmi styly řešení konfliktů. Výsledky studie ukazují, že tendence ke lhaní pozitivně souvisí s dominantním stylem, dále negativně souvisí se sjednocujícím stylem. Oproti očekávání souvisí vyhýbavý styl s tendencí ke lhaní v opačném směru – tedy v záporném. Nakonec, ochotný styl nenaznačuje žádný vztah s tendencí ke lhaní. Vztah není ovlivněn věkem, naopak se objevují rozdíly mezi muži a ženami. Zároveň se zajímavé rozdíly ukazují v rámci dvou scénářů, které byly použity pro vážnou lež. A konečně, u každého scénáře rozhodovala také relevance situace pro dané participanty.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between four styles of handling conflicts and propensity to lie. The four styles include integrating, obliging, dominating and avoiding. Propensity to lie is investigated in lying in everyday life (general lying) and lying in a high stake situation. Previous studies found significant outcomes in high competitive and proself conflict representation or behavior. In this study, findings of social value orientation, conflict frames and mental conflict models are connect with with conflict behavior, which is representated by integrating, obliging, dominating a avoiding style. Results of the study show, that propensity to lie is positively associated with dominating style and negatively associated with integrating style. In contrast with expectation, avoiding style is associated with propensity to lie in opposite direction – which is, negative direction. Finally, obligating style does not show any association with propensity to lie. This association is not influenced by age; in contrast, there are some differences between men and women. In addition, interestings differences are detected in two scenarios, which are used for high stake lie. In the end, within each scenario was important also relevance of the situation for participants.
