Spatial distribution changes of macro- and meiobenthos in bed sediments of an intermittent stream

Abstract:

Vysychání je významný stresor pro všechna vodní tělesa a jejich faunu. V této práci byl zkoumán vliv vysychání na makro- a meiobentos v dnových sedimentech intermitentního toku a možnost využití hyporeálu jako refugia během vysychání. Vzorky byly odebrané v roce 2005 na intermitentním úseku Gránického potoka nedaleko Znojma metodou freeze-core do hloubky 70 cm během tří odběrových termínů a na třech různých habitatech. Bylo stanoveno velikostní složení sedimentu, spočítány denzity hyporeosu na úrovni vyšších taxonomických skupin a u vybraných skupin až na úroveň druhu. Na obou těchto datových souborech byly provedeny přímé i nepřímé ordinační analýzy a neparametrické testy. Nejvýznamnějším faktorem prostředí pro oba soubory byla hloubka, dále pak sezóna podzim pro druhová data a habitat peřej pro skupinová data. Bylo zjištěno, že hyporeál jako refugium může být využit jen na habitatech s hrubším substrátem nebo tam, kde dochází k podpovrchové (podélné či laterální) komunikaci s okolím, v tomto případě v peřeji. Pronikání fauny hlouběji do substrátu bylo v mnoha případech znemožněno vrstvou nepropustných jemných částic.

Abstract:

Drought is an important stressor for all freshwater ecosystems and their fauna. This thesis focuses on the influence of drought on macro- and meiobenthos and the use of hyporheic zone as a refugium during drought. Samples of bed sediments were taken by freeze-core method in 2005 in the intermittent Gránický brook near Znojmo from sediment surface down to the depth of 70 cm during three sampling occasions in three different habitats. Size distribution of sediment was measured, and density of hyporeos was calculated at higher taxon level and for selected taxa at species level. On both datasets direct and indirect analysis and nonparametric tests were performed. It was discovered that the best predictor for both data sets were the depth, the season autumn for species data and the habitat riffle for higher taxa data. Hyporheic zone as a refugium can be used on habitats with rough grains or there where subsurface (longitudinal or lateral) communication occurs. Fine grains prevented fauna from penetrating into deep layers in many cores.
