Precipitation conditions of the Brno region

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá statistickou analýzou srážkových úhrnů na území města Brna a v jeho blízkém okolí podle údajů ze standardní sítě stanic Českého hydrometeorologického ústavu (ČHMÚ). Počátek historie měření srážek na území Brna sahá do roku 1803, kdy je zde realizoval člen c.k. Moravskoslezské hospodářské společnosti Zachariáš Melzer. Místo jeho měření však zatím zůstává neznámé. Po lékařích Josephu Steinerovi a Pavlu Olexíkovi se v letech 1878−1883 meteorologickým pozorováním včetně měření srážek věnoval také známý brněnský přírodovědec a tehdejší opat augustiniánského kláštera Řehoř Jan Mendel.Hustota srážkoměrné sítě na území města Brna se v období od konce 19. století do současnosti vyznačovala značnou proměnlivostí s maximem mezi lety 1930 a 1960, kdy v Brně fungovalo zároveň až 14 stanic. V předložené dizertační práci byly použity údaje z většiny brněnských stanic za co nejdelší dostupné období, tj. od konce 19. století do roku 2010. Jednotlivé stanice mají rozdílnou délku časových řad, což bylo v některých případech vyřešeno prodloužením pomocí tzv. technické řady a zpracováním pro několik různých období.Statistické zpracování zahrnulo kromě výpočtu základních statistických charakteristik, stanovení průměrného ročního chodu a analýzy trendu také konstrukci map průměrných ročních a sezonních srážkových úhrnů, které ve studovaném území odrážejí významnou závislost srážek na nadmořské výšce. Analýza časové variability odhalila převážně rostoucí tendenci srážkových úhrnů v době od 60. let 20. století, která se projevuje ve všech sezonách kromě zimy. S ohledem na studium možných projevů klimatické změny byly vypočteny také speciální charakteristiky označené jako indexy extremity, které ukazují, že ve stejné době (tj. od 60. let 20. století do současnosti) dochází k nárůstu podílu srážek z extrémních situací na celkovém srážkovém úhrnu. Souběžné prodlužování délky suchých období a kladný trend intenzity srážkového dne svědčí o poklesu rovnoměrnosti rozložení a rostoucí koncentraci srážek v čase, což je konzistentní s pozorovaným nárůstem extremity srážkového režimu konstatovaným IPCC ve Čtvrté hodnotící zprávě.Samostatná kapitola je v této dizertační práci věnována studiu potenciálního vlivu města Brna na srážky, který je zkoumán prostřednictvím hodnocení statistické významnosti rozdílů v úhrnech srážek a v počtu srážkových dní mezi jednotlivými stanicemi a také formou případových studií situací s denním srážkovým úhrnem nad 50 mm. Pozornost je věnována rovněž výskytu nebezpečných hydrometeorologických jevů zahrnujících bouřky a krupobití a výpočtu denních srážkových úhrnů opakujících se s danou periodou. Předložená dizertační práce tak navazuje na monografii Dobrovolného a kol. (2012) věnovanou klimatu Brna a přispívá k rozšíření souboru prací z oblasti urbánní klimatologie v České republice. Přínosem práce je také využití maximálního množství dostupných dat včetně aktuálních údajů. Digitalizace starších dat ze srážkoměrných výkazů přispěla k rozšíření množství údajů v elektronické databázi ČHMÚ.

Abstract:

This Ph.D. thesis is focused on the statistical analysis of precipitation sums in the city of Brno and its surroundings. With its nearly 400 000 inhabitants and the area of 230 km2, the city of Brno represent the second largest urban area in the Czech Republic which is located in its southeastern part, near the confluence of Svratka and Svitava river. The study is based on the analysis of data provided by measuring network owned by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) that is the main organization ensuring meteorogical service in the Czech Republic. Systematic measurement of precipitation in Brno started as early as in 1803 and it was conducted by Zachariáš Melzer who used to be a member of the Moravian-Silesian Agricultural Society in those days. Unfortunately, the location of his meteorological observations is unknown. After the period of meteorological observations of two physians, Joseph Steiner and Paul Olexík, it was adopted by famous Czech natural scientist Johann Gregor Mendel who hold the position of abbot in Brno augustinian monastery. The monastery was at the same time the place where he carried out his meteorological observations in the period 1878−1883. The density of precipitation measuring network in Brno has been highly variable since the end of the 19th century to the present day. The maximum density was reached between the years 1930 and 1960 when 14 stations providing precipitation measurement were in operation in the cadastral area of Brno. This Ph.D. thesis analyses precipitation data from the majority of ever existing stations in Brno and it uses the longest time series available to the author of the thesis (i.e. from the end of the 19th century to 2010). The problem of different time series length was solved by the calculation of so called technical series and by the processing for several time periods. The statistical analysis performed in this study included the computation of basic statistical characteristics and average annual course as well as the creation of maps of average annual and seasonal precipitation sums that show strong dependence on the orography. The analysis of time variability revealed positive trend of precipitation sums in all seasons except winter that manifests itself since the 1960s. Potential manifestation of climate change was studied with the help of special extremity indices computed from daily data. The results of trend analysis performed on these indices show increasing tendency of portion of precipitation sums from extreme events on total precipitation amount. Together with positive trend of dry spell duration and wet day intensity it brings the evidence of the shift of precipitation regime from evenly distributed to more time concentrated. These results are consistent with the findings published in IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report. Special attention is paid to the analysis of potential urban influence on precipitation which was studied via statistical significance testing of differences in precipitation sums and number of precipitation days among particular stations. Another method was the frequency analysis of dangerous hydrometeorogical phenomena including thunderstorms and hailstorms, computation of daily precipitation suma corresponding to given return periods and case studies of situations with daily precipitation amount above 50 mm. Following the monography focused on the climate of the Brno city by Dobrovolný et al. (2012), this Ph.D. thesis represents an important contribution to current Czech urban climate literature. It employs data from numerous measuring sites including latest records. Subsidiary benefit of the work is the extension of CHMI’s electronic archives because of the digitalization of some older records.
