Functional recovery of the upper limb in a patient with brachial plexus injury: case report

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the management of injuries to the brachial plexus in adults. First, the anatomy of the brachial plexus will be analyzed. The most common lesions affecting this part of the peripheral nervous system will be described below with symptoms, etiology and epidemiology. The degrees of injury that can involve these nerve structures and their classification will reported. Their effects on the central nervous system will also be described. The alternatives available for the diagnostic investigation and treatment of the disease will then be considered, also taking into account which may be the most suitable for a specific type of injury. Finally, this paper will describe a clinical case of a patient, a 55-year-old man, who suffered an infraclavicular injury of the brachial plexus which mainly involves the posterior cord and therefore the axillary and radial nerve following an automotive accident.

Abstract:

In questo lavoro viene analizzata la gestione delle lesioni a carico del plesso brachiale nell'adulto. Dopo aver analizzato l'anatomia del plesso brachiale, verranno descritte le lesioni pi? comuni che riguardano questo tratto del sistema nervoso periferico con sintomatologia, eziologia ed epidemiologia. Si approfondiranno i gradi di lesione che possono coinvolgere queste strutture nervose e la loro classificazione nonché i loro effetti sul sistema nervoso centrale. Verranno prese in considerazione le alternative disponibili per l'indagine diagnostica e per il trattamento della patologia, tenendo conto anche di quale potrebbe essere la pi? indicata per un determinato tipo di lesione. Sar?, cos?, descritto un caso clinico di un paziente, maschio di 55 anni, che ha subito una lesione infraclavicolare del plesso brachiale con coinvolgimento principalmente della corda posteriore e dei nervi ascellare e radiale in seguito ad un incidente automobilistico.
