Segmentation and Virtualization in Software-Defined Networks (SDN)

Abstract:

Based on the fact, that concept of software-defined networks is completely new technology, it’s providing the new opportunities of managing, segmentation and configuration of networks. For that, the aim of this thesis is to explore available options of segmentation and virtualization, which is offered by software-defined networks. At first, all of these mechanisms are described and presented in detail. Subsequently, the thesis focuses on ways of usage and deployment of described technologies to complex computer network, such as a network of Masaryk University, which is presented in detail too. Also, this thesis describes analysis of required functions, which served as a basis for design of usage of available segmentation technologies in software-defined networks. This design was selected in a way preserving all the functions provided by current topology. At the end, there are described next possible ways of using available new technologies. None of that is currently in use, but it may be useful for further development.

Abstract:

Vzhľadom na to, že koncept softvérovo definovaných sietí je úplne nový, poskytuje aj nové možnosti spravovania, rozdelenia a konfigurácie siete. Preto cieľom tejto práce je preskúmať dostupné možnosti segmentácie a virtualizácie, ktoré ponúkajú softvérovo definované siete. Všetky tieto mechanizmy sú najprv detailne popísané a predstavené. Neskôr sa práca zaoberá spôsobom využitia a nasadenia popísaných technológií na netriviálnu počítačovú sieť, akou je sieť Masarykovej univerzity, ktorá je detailne predstavená. Taktiež práca popisuje rozanalyzované požadované funkcie, ktoré slúžili ako základ pre návrh použitia dostupných segmentačných techník v softvérovo definovaných sieťach. Pri výbere tohto návrhu bolo postupované tak, aby boli zachované všetky funkcie, ktoré sú poskytované aj v aktuálnej topológii. V závere sú popísané aj ďalšie možné spôsoby využitia dostupných nových technológií, ktoré sa aktuálne nevyužívajú, ale môžu byť užitočné pri ďalšom rozvoji siete.
