Effects of Different Nitrogen Concentrations and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus on Treatment Performance in Constructed Wetlands

Abstract:

This study investigates the effects of diverse nitrogen concentrations as well as the presence and absence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the treatment performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) for synthetic wastewater treatment. The vertical substrate flow CWs working along with Iris pseudacorus, Rhizophagus irregularis (BEG140) as AMF inoculum, and as was anticipated, filled with substrate. The experiment involved testing CWs with different nitrogen concentrations, such as NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺ and MIXED, and both with AMF and absence of AMF inoculation. Samples were taken for analysis and measurements of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Carbon (TC), Inorganic Carbon (IC), Total Nitrogen (TN), Nitrates and Nitrites for 8 weeks, August-September 2025. Consequently, the results showed that for TOC removal, AMF treatments consistently showed high efficiency (above 88%), whereas non-AMF treatments, particularly NH₄⁺ NON-AMF, were more variable and sometimes less efficient. Therefore, regarding TN removal, NH₄⁺-AMF and MIXED-AMF treatments were usually effective (over 80%), on the other hand, NO₃⁻-AMF showed more fluctuation. Non-AMF systems were generally less consistent in TN removal, with NH₄⁺-NON-AMF exhibiting the most variability. In consequence, this study revealed that different nutrient concentrations together with incorporating AMF in CWs could potentially influence the treatment of synthetic wastewater, suggesting satisfactory and efficient wastewater treatment solutions.
